The person I chose to be person of the year is Ronald Reagan. This man was not only our 40th president of the United States, but he was a great influence on the soviet union. As Reagan would like to say ‘’ The Soviet Union is the focus of evil in the modern world.’’
When I came to do my research on Ronal Regan I found a tremendous amount of quotes by him like the one above, and papers upon papers about how he enforced the foreign policy. This not only helped us interact with other countries, but made it possible for other countries to agree with us on certain plans.
Ronald Reagan grew up in a small town called Tampico on the upper east side of Illinois to Edward ‘’jack’’ Reagan (1883-1941) and Nelle Wilson Reagan(1883-1962). He became a
At the time of Jimmy Carter's presidency, he was often perceived as an unsatisfactory president, but today is associated with some of the exceptional ex-presidents. His accomplishments drew interest from the Nobel Committee, who would ultimately award him the Nobel Peace Prize. Jimmy Carter’s background, actions, and legacy, assisted him in winning the prestigious award.
Reagan rose into power after years of turmoil and the American pride was dipping. About a decade before he became president, the war in Viet-Nam was winding down and the troops were returning home to negative demonstrations towards their duty. Then, during the Carter years, America transitioned into a détente policy, which meant that the United States would try to ease the tensions with the Soviet Union by not expanding the military, but not doing anything to acting ease the tension. The idea behind this became known as MAD, mutually assured destruction, (Hannaford) which meant that both the United States and Soviet Union would maintain and even number of nuclear weapons so that if one would fire, the other would be able to fire back equally. Reagan completely disagreed with this philosophy and created a whole new policy when he became president. The foreign policy he established was to create the Reagan Doctrine. According to a speech by Peter Hannaford, the Reagan Doctrine was that America would support democratic movements in any Communist country until that country could enjoy the fruits of freedom (Hannaford). This meant that the United States would help any country who wanted to leave the influence of the Soviet Union and create their own democracy. Also, to counter the Soviet Union and end the Cold War, a race between the United State and Soviet Union to create the best technology and become the world powerhouse, Reagan increased military spending. Ronald Reagan knew that the Soviet Union was unable to keep up the United States in military spending and still having enough funds to fund their own economy to keep it stable. Reagan used this knowledge to convince Congress to increase military budget to build up technology, causing the Soviets decide on what to do. The United States had the funds to continue, but the Soviet Union could not keep up. The breaking point
Ronald Reagan grew up with an alcoholic father, Jack Reagan (“Life Before the”). After his death, Ronald’s mother, Nelle, nurtured and encouraged him and his brother, Neil (“Life Before the”). Nelle taught her sons that alcoholism is a disease and she did not want her boys to blame their father for the bad habit (“Life Before the”). Growing up with an alcoholic father made Ronald take a different path and become the well rounded man that he was. In his high school years, Reagan excelled on both the football and basketball teams. Reagan even acted in plays, and he was also a writer for the school newspaper (“Life Before the”). Reagan was also an excellent swimmer, he worked as a lifeguard and according to newspaper reports, he rescued 77 people from drowning (“Life Before the”). He had lots of integrity and he had the commitment to do what is right regardless of the impact. Reagan was even the student body president which shows his early leadership qualities.
President Jimmy Carter was born October 1924 in a little town called Plains located in Georgia. As a young boy, he grew up in Archery a little nearby community and Jimmy Carter was drawn into farming just the same way his father James Earl Carter was. His family was surrounded by peanut crops, politic talk and being faithful to the Baptist religion. While he attended school in a public school of Plains his father took care of the crops and worked as a business man; his mother Lillian Gordy Carter was working as a registered nurse.
Ronald Regan should be the person of the decade. He was able to get America out of another recession. He was also able to ease the tensions between the United States and the USSR. During his presidency he initiated multiple projects to keep main land America safe from the threat of nuclear disaster many of which are still in effect today.
Cannon begins the book by discussing Reagan’s humble beginnings. He was born in the front bedroom of a five-bedroom flat above the general store where his father worked, near Tampico, Illinois. He spent his childhood in a succession of small Indiana towns. His family was very poor, but not quite living in poverty. They came close to being crushed by the Depression. His father, Jack Reagan, was an Irish-Catholic, but only their first son, Ronald’s brother Neil, was baptized a Catholic. Jack was a hard-worker, but struggled with alcoholism throughout his life. His mother Nelle was a very moral and dignified woman. She encouraged her children to get a good education so they could have a better life.

It does not matter if you are the President of the United States or if you are living off of few crumbs, everyone has battles to face. Some problems are publicized, others are internally present. Life is not perfect. Nor is it meant to be. Some people are facing different problems such as mental illness, physical defects, domestic violence, death of loved one, and even more. Focus on being grateful even in the most atrocious circumstances; this is the message Nancy Reagan wanted to tell to the constituents of America. Nancy Reagan, being a Republican, expressed her devoting to religion in the most difficult times. Some people go out of their way to make another life miserable. For this, I’m assuming that she abides by this quote: “God doesn’t
Former First Lady Nancy Reagan passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday. She was 94 years old. She had been a key helper, adviser, and protector of her husband, Ronald Reagan, who served as president of the United States from 1981 to 1989.
As stated above, Reagan believed in minimal government intervention and lowering taxes. Today, America faces an entirely different economic scene, and it is necessary for the government to pour money into the economy to stimulate growth instead of holding back resources. America has a higher unemployment rate that could be lowered by the government increasing taxes on the rich and distributing those resources to aid programs, and upping the minimum wage potentially. Furthermore, in today’s global economy, the United States cannot afford to implement such strong trade restrictions as Reagan did because we rely on the labor and resources of other countries so heavily. In the 1980’s, the world faced distrust and fear during the Cold War. Thus a large emphasis was placed on isolation and closing off trade routes to foreign countries with conflicting political ideologies. Today, the world is more cohesive than ever and the need and desire for international trading and relations is strong. Thus, the Obama administration has worked to increase and strengthen these relationships, not close them off like Reagan did. Finally, while Reagan aimed to limit government spending, ultimately he poured millions of dollars into arms and defense thus spending quite a bit of money in this sector and actually increased
