Barely half-way into the first scene and violence bursts out on Verona’s thoroughfare. The Prince, Escalus, is forced to ride into town to find the source of this conundrum, and finds the culprits once again to be the Capulets and the Montagues; then declares: “By thee, old Capulet, and Montague, have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets and made Verona’s ancient citizens cast by their grave beseeming ornaments to wield old partisans, in hands as old, canker'd with peace, to part your canker'd hate. If ever you disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace” (Shakespeare I. i. 83-90). Through this statement Prince Escalus sheds light on the fact that the family feud has involved more than just themselves. Whether the two families have realized or not, they have single-handedly managed to take the ancient peace of Verona and turn it into a defensive behaviour that forces the citizens to take arms in fear that the two will quarrel in their once peaceful streets. As the name given to the attacks suggests, terror attacks are quite terrifying and usually intend to make a show out of the victims of the attacks. Paris in 2015 was no exception to these intentions, as on November 13th terrorists from Syria detonated bombs at a concert hall, football (soccer) stadium, and five restaurants; the result traumatizing the French and European populations and raising concern over more potential attacks from extremist jihadists radicalized by conflicts in the Middle East (Gladstone, Adam Nossiter and Rick). The intended effects of the attack were achieved, as it reverberated across oceans and caused many countries to tighten their security regarding the same fears and concerns. It was able to even reach the United States, since President Obama made a statement following the attacks: “Once again, we’ve seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians, This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share” (Gladstone, Adam Nossiter and Rick). In the United States, the attack wasn’t viewed as an attack on just the French community, but as an attack on the entire human race, Likely because the type of attacks executed in Paris and in so many other places around the globe try to instill fear and force human beings to tear down common values each one shares, to put

Prince Escalus of Verona plays an immense part in the effect of the Montagues’ and Capulets’ animosity towards each other. For the prince it is more of what he did not do than what he did. The prince lets the feuding families grow in enmity. He doesn’t take enough action to squash his rebellious subjects’ uproars, and when he does take action and punishes them, he is too lenient. The prince himself acknowledges his faults by saying, “And I for winking at your discords too. Have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished.”(Shakespeare Act. V: iii) And all are punished, but the ones who feel it the most are those who began the feud; the Capulets and the Montagues.

“Love is the most powerful force on Earth.” This statement by Nelson Rockefeller, a previous vice president and businessman, proves to be an accurate notion for the protagonists in the play Romeo and Juliet, as well as Ophelia in Hamlet. The suicides committed by these characters in their respective plays portray the powerful nature of love and loyalty and the overwhelming passion and violence they can trigger.
