‘Romeo and Juliet’ written by William Shakespeare incorporates the theme of tragic love through many situations. The definition of ‘Tragic love’ is “a love that does not go smoothly or may end bad.” The play focuses on the tragic love between Romeo & Juliet, from two opposing families. From the start of the two lovers relationship they have been fighting a battle to be together. Throughout the play Shakespeare shows how love is toxic.
The first act that shows tragic love is the prologue, when it tells the reader “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life (prologue).” this states that the life of two star-crossed lovers is going to end. In this text “star-cross’d” according to an online dictionary means “Thwarted by bad luck.” With this said, neither Romeo or Juliet know they are going to take their life. The Montague family and the Capulet family did not get along. “Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word by thee, old Capulet, and Montague have thrice disturb’d the quiet of our streets (I. i. 80-82).” This tells us that this feud has caused other troubles and is continuing to. According to Lois Kershen, “Although this play is considered one of the greatest love stories of all time, viewed from another angle, it may be that it is a story about hate (Kershen).” she states that the theme is hate and which goes along with what i'm saying, Romeo and Juliet couldn't be together due to the hatred between the two families.
