Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo and Juliet is compelling when communicating the main ideas of the play by providing the audience with a modern translation of the play using the motifs in the film which correlate to the play.
Mise en Scene is excellently exhibited by using the visual representation of water in the film, or the absence thereof in desert exile scenes in order to convey Shakespeare’s theme of love. In the movie, the well known balcony scene is turned into a midnight swim. Juliet is drawn to the pool when she is comprehending that Romeo is the son of her family’s enemy. Throughout the film, it is clearly shown that the feud is deadly, referring to Mercutio and Tybalt’s death. Although poison has a literal purpose in the play, it also serves as a symbol of hatred between the two families. Friar Laurence uses a simile to apprise the belief that people are a lot like flowers—full of both “loveliness” and “rude-will,” even humans have the capability to be good or deadly. He mentions that it all depends on whether the “rude-will” takes over, which refers directly to how Romeo and Juliet’s love turns deadly when it is poisoned by the family’s vile feud. Due to the feud, the family would never allow the two lovers to be together which is the sole reason Juliet faked her own death and was brought to the Capulet tomb. When Romeo finds Juliet ‘dead’ in the Capulet tomb he can’t bear to live without her love, and he consumes poison which kills him. After Juliet regains consciousness and finds that her love is lifeless, she kills herself using Romeo’s dagger to be with him. This symbol displays that Juliet is happy to die as she describes the item that kills her with a positive connotation using the word ‘happy’. The reader realizes this when the prologue states, “Two households, both alike in dignity/ In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, / From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,/ Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean./ From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life” (I 1-6). This translates to say two families have been rivals for many years. Romeo and Juliet are two from separate rivaling families that fall in love. The reader can acknowledge that these two individuals meet one another due to fate. However, they know that because of their parents’ hatred of each other, they can never be together. “My only love sprung from my only hate!/ Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/ Prodigious birth of love it is to me,/ That I must love a loathed enemy” (I v138-140). A decision is made that the only way to be happy is to take their lives. As soon as the play begins, the audience can foresee a tragic ending because of the language used.

The audience can be greatly affected in their interpretation of the story by the mise-en-scene, costuming, and the hidden symbolic meaning. This great piece of literature was edited in two unique and intriguing forms, one Zeferelli directed which was filmed in 1968, and the modern version produced in 1996. The different scenes throughout the length of the party were the most influential to me in that I saw how different these movies were directed, and the different meaning I experienced from watching these movies. Focusing on the environment of the scenes and the costuming helped me in my interpretation, because I found hidden symbolism from these two qualities.

Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is a film that converts Shakespeare’s famous play into a present-day setting. The film transforms the original texts into modern notions, whilst still employing Shakespearean language. Compared to Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Luhrmann’s picture is easier for a teenage audience to understand and relate to because of his modernisations. Despite the passing of four centuries Shakespeare’s themes of love, hate, violence, family and mortality remain the same regardless of the setting.

The hatred between the two families, the Montagues and the Capulets make Romeo and Juliet love each other so much that they kill themselves. Juliet meets Romeo at the Capulet ball and falls in love with him. Juliet finds out that Romeo is a Montague and says to herself, “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.35). The opposition between the two families guide Romeo and Juliet secretly seeing each other. This displays that hatred puts Romeo and Juliets life in risk which leads to their death. Later in the story, Romeo takes a suicide because he could not resist being without his true love. When Juliet wakes up, she finds Romeo’s dead body lying on the floor, “What’s here? a cup, closed in my true love’s hand? Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end. O churl! drunk all, and left no friendly drop to help me after? I will kiss thy lips. Haply some poison yet doth hang on them to make me die with a restorative” (5.3.175). Directors Franco Zeffirelli (1968) and Baz Luhrman (1996) provide examples of the plays adaption to suit the teenage generation of their time. Identifying the key elements of each version: the directors intentions, time/place, pace, symbols, language and human context is one way to clearly show how each director clearly reaches their target audience. Overall however Luhrman’s adaptation would be more effective for capturing the teenage audience.
A young girl, like Juliet can be mesmerized by the idea of love and have the thought in her head that love is all that matters. The intensity of love in both of these texts becomes a dangerous and violent thing. Juliet goes through physical pain stabbing herself so she could be with Romeo after his death. Juliet looks at death as a positive thing because it allows her to be with Romeo again. Before she kills herself she says, “O, happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die” (Shakespeare V.iii.174-175). In most romantic tales, violence is the last thing you would think of when it comes to love, but it would be different in this play. In both of these texts we see love destroy people mentally and physically; instead of bring happiness to their lives. When Juliet notices that Romeo drank poison and had killed himself, she was not only upset about his death but also seemed more upset that he “left no friendly drop to help me after! I will kiss thy lips. Haply some poison yet doth hang on them” (Shakespeare V.iii.168-170). This bond that seems to be unbreakable between them causes more harm than it would have if they were not together like society would want them to be.
