“So smile the heavens upon this holy act that after-hours with sorrow chide us not” (2.6). This line marks the beginning of the marriage scene between the two most famous star-crossed lovers in literature. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet get married by Friar Lawrence in act 2 scene 6. Preparing and preforming this section of the play helped increase my understanding of how the three characters must have felt and how they might have acted toward one another; the experience of preforming this section also helped me grasp the emotions of each character all throughout the play.

The union of Romeo and Juliet carries the force of society versus individuals. They get married despite the society, their family, establishing that a relationship between these two bloodlines is forbidden. This scene shows that their love is real unlike the feelings Romeo had for Rosaline. Juliet describes her happiness by saying “But my true love has grown to such excess I cannot sum up sum of half my wealth” (2.6.). She explains how her love made her so rich she cannot even count her wealth. The scene shows how dedicated they are together, leading them to do whatever is possible to stay together. Their high caliber level of love is demonstrated by the act of suicide in order to be with each other. When the Friar tells Romeo that “The sweetest honey is loathsome in his own deliciousness and in the taste confounds the appetite” (2.6). He says that too much of something good can be bad and he compares that to Romeo and Juliet’s love. This foretells their future death. It aided in understanding how the characters would have spoken and acted with one another. Friar Lawrence opening the scene praying for the heavens to be happy with Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, is a small but important part of the play. It shows how Romeo and Juliet truly love each other and how they would do anything for one another despite their families’ feud which will make their relationship very hard to maintain: this is why they need help from the heavens, this is demonstrated throughout scene 6. This scene also foreshadows the death of the young lively couple. Act 2 scene 6 opens up Romeo and Juliet’s genuine love for one another and made them feel closer than ever.
