Star-Crossed love in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

The famous line from the infamous story Romeo and Juliet reads, “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life...”(Shakespeare, Prologue, Lines 5, 6). From the start, the legendary tale exposes the reader to an interesting scenario, for it presents the concept of love between Romeo and Juliet as bridging the gap between conflict and hate (hinting to attributes of true love) but also as a cause of their death (hinting immature love). With the rest of the story to follow, it may be allusive and debatable as to how exactly Shakespeare portrayed the love between Romeo and Juliet. In doing this, one will either result in the aspect being similar or different. If similar, one can tell that Romeo and Juliet’s love in genuine and true, but if they come out to be different, one can see that their love is flat and immature. So, in the first case, a reader can identify that their love is true through their actions. The article “11 Characteristics of True Love” states, “Love forgives quickly...lasting love requires burying the hatchet daily. It’s forgiving your partner for the sake of peace and sanity and because you love your partner.”(Subramaniam). This forgiving quality of true love can be seen in Romeo and Juliet’s relationship when in the play it says, “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-crossed lovers…” (Shakespeare, Prologue, Lines 5, 6). Here, from the very beginning of the play, it is shown that the two lovers, physically bridge the gap of hate between their two families. Although their love is clearly true, it may not be so in all aspects. As stated in the prologue, their love is “ death marked.” The play warns against lovers become the whole world to each other, for many effects of their kind of relationship are seen. For example, they eventually die together but also at the expense of Mercutio and Tybalt, they cause heartbreak for their own families, and their foolish actions endanger others around them. All in all, this evidence shows that the love between Romeo and Juliet is true, but the extent, to which they fell for each other, was too great. So, one can clearly see that as a whole, their love was both immature and mature. Their affection towards each other is proven to be true, however, their wielding and direction of their beautiful love ultimately led to their demise.
