In William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” Mercutio gives an imaginative speech of Queen Mab to jest Romeo for not having fun with others but dwell on his passion towards dreams. In act 1.4, Romeo explains to Mercutio that he is not going to the Capulet’s party as “dreamt a dream tonight” (1.4.50) that tell him not to. Romeo believes that dreams are reflecting reality and telling the truth and he is not joining his friends to the party. Mercutio exasperated by Romeo’s passion about dreams and scold him by giving the famous Queen Mab speech to illustrate the nature of dream to Romeo. Queen Mad is covered with “wings of grasshoppers” (1.4.60), together with her chariot’s images of “long spinners’ legs” (1.4.59), “cricket’s bone”’ (1.4.30), and “gnat” (1.4.64), replicate the broken features of dreams. Queen Mab chariot constructs with different parts from different insects illustrate that dreams are little pieces of a big picture. Mercutio uses insects like grasshopper and cricket to highlight the trickiness of dreams. They are hard to catch, they come and go visit people randomly and human have no authority of when and where to have dreams. Dreams are dynamic and fluctuating all the time, they are not connected or continue after one and other. The insects Mercutio uses have wings and hops around which enhance the shifting features of dreams.
Besides Queen Mab’s power and mischievous, she is also very dangerous. She leaves “trace of the smallest spider web” (1.4.61) after her visit. Spider web illustrates the entrapment that dreams could bring. The function of the spider web is to catch prey, and the more the prey struggle on the web. This serve as an irony to Romeo, who is so passionate about his dreams and got himself trap into Queen Mab tricks to lose his focus and let her influence Romeo’s reality and execute her power through fantasy.
