Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers, who meet, fall in love, and die in four days. In 13th century Italy, young girls were permitted from talking to young men or even make eye contact with them. Instead, their families arranged their marriages, like how Juliet was supposed to marry County Paris. But Juliet broke all the rules by talking to Romeo, marrying him, and refusing to marry noble Paris, because she was madly in love with Romeo. But she starts facing the consequences of being impetuous and eventually makes irrational decisions in order to marry Romeo. like the Friar saying, “wisely and slowly; they stumble that run fast’’ [2.3.94]. In Juliet’s words specifically, when Lady Capulet asks Juliet about marriage, before the party, Juliet says, “it is an honour that I dream not of’’ [1.3.67]. In other words, Juliet says that she will marry whoever her parents choose for her, but she is not in a hurry to get married, nor does she think about it, but she states it in a respectful manner. After the party, however, her attitude towards marriage changes, she swiftly changes from patient to impetuous. Because, Juliet falls in love with Romeo, she becomes impetuous, and proposes marriage to Romeo. When Romeo asks Juliet, if he can kiss her, she says, “Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hands too much/which mannerly devotion shows in this;For saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch,…”[1.5.97-99]. For a thirteen year old, Juliet was greatly in control of her emotions, when she first meets Romeo at the party. She acts very mature for her age, when he asks her if he could kiss her. But as her character changes, because they rush their relationship, she changes from controlled, to overwhelmed. Just when Juliet finds out about Tybalt’s death, and Romeo’s banishment, she reacts by saying, “O serpent heart, hid with flowering face!/ Did ever dragon keep so fair a cave?/Beautiful tyrant! Fiend angelical!/Dove feather’d raven! wolvish-ravening lamb!…”[3.2.73-76]. Juliet is overwhelmed by all the emotions she is feeling, when she finds out about Tybalts, and Romeo’s misfortune.
