Keeping Abortion Legal

Abortion is defined as the termination of a human pregnancy (“Merriam-Webster”). Abortion became legal 43 years ago in the United States on January 22, 1973, after the Roe vs. Wade case. Before 1973, a pre-born baby was protected by law in America, prohibiting any termination unless in a life or death situation. Roe was a Texas women who was not ready for a child. In this case she was unable to terminate her pregnancy by law before her legal dispute was heard in front of the Supreme Court forcing her to have the child, then give the baby up for adoption. In many instances the case would have been thrown out based on the fact that a decision was made but her case was unique in the sense that pregnancies are reoccurring. …show more content…

People from this time have horrendous stories from either their own experience or witnessing another’s. A pregnancy does not only happen when a loving couple comes together deciding to start a family. In some unfortunate instances women are raped, in result to that the female can become pregnant. This alone could create a life or death situation. A women may contemplate taking her own life along with the unborn child just to prevent having to deal with the circumstances. In other instances women would try ingesting multiple drugs at once in anticipation of creating a miscarriage. Women even went to the great lengths of attempting to remove the fetus with foreign objects such as coat hangers. Not only could that result in ruining the entire reproductive system but, can cause infections leading to death. Reproductive rights were a big priority. Women and even men fought to make abortion legal and safe. Women talked publicly in speak-outs for the first time about their experiences. One women spoke on receiving an illegal abortion then being molested by the same man who performed her abortion. Minutes later after just telling her to refrain from any sexual contact. Many women had stories on how now they can never have children again after an infection ruined their reproductive system. Any story of a botched abortion is disheartening. Having the chance to reproduce is a gift. All women should be able to experience that throughout life when she chooses
