In the recent months and years stories of robbery have been circulating in the newspapers and have become very problematic topic in the community. With all the fear related robberies in the community, there is a large amount of encounter between victims and offenders when there is an armed robber, and with property crime had small encounter between the victims and the offenders. This paper explores the laws of robbery in New York, some cases about armed robbery, the recent news and events that have occurred dealing with robbery, the rise in weapons, especially, fire arms.
What is robbery? According to the New York State Penal Law Code, robbery is the crime of taking or attempting to take something that is valued by strength and by putting fear upon the victim. A person forcibly steals property and commits robbery when, in the path of committing larceny. He uses or threatens the use of physical force upon another person for the purpose of either preventing or overcoming confrontation to take the property or to maintain it right away after the taking it in their possession. One can also forceful take away the owner property, deliver up the property or to engage in other conduct which helps them to get commission of the larceny. Robbery is different from other forms of theft, such as car theft, burglary because it involves the use of violence. In 1934, it became a federal crime to steal from any national bank or state member bank of the Federal Reserve and soon the law expanded to include bank burglary, larceny, and similar crimes, with authority handed over to the FBI.

But, firearms deaths related to death had declined from 1993 to 2011. Death rate went from 18,253 to 11,101. In 2011, non fatal gun injuries were 55,544 which had increased compared to previous year and gun aggravated assault was 138,336 which had decreased from 2004. Also, the highest rates of gun homicide were seen in young African American males between the age of 18 to 24 and nonfatal gun violence was sixty one percent from 2007 to 2011.
