On the typical day, over 90 people will die at the hand of opioid abuse in America alone (National). In fact, as of 2014, nearly 2 million Americans were dependent and abusing opioids. The Opioid Crisis has affected America and its citizens in various ways, including health policy, health care, and the life in populous areas. Due to the mass dependence and mortality, the crisis has become an issue that must be resolved in all aspects.

Fear is an idea that almost everyone deals with in a lifetime. Terror is a shared emotion, but is provoked in different ways, such as spiders or clowns. A common fear is a fear of being alone physically or emotionally. Isolation in thought tends to grow this fear since original thoughts are difficult to explain if no one else has ever come to the same conclusions. Since that time through various federal, state and local laws, drugs like morphine are now prescription drugs; however, this has not stopped the addiction to opiate based pain killers. Today’s society combats an ever increasing number of very deadly addictive drugs from designer drugs to narcotics to the less potent but equally destructive alcohol and marijuana. With all of these new and old drugs going in and out of vogue with addicts, it appears that the increase of misuse and abuse is founded greater in the prescription opiate based painkillers.

Although opiates are derived from opium and opioids refer to synthetic drugs created to emulate opium, nowadays the term opioid is used for the entire family of drugs including natural, synthetic and semi-synthetic. Opium is an extract of the exudate derived from seedpods of the poppy plant, Papaver somniferum. The opium poppy is native to the Middle East and was cultivated in lower Mesopotamia.

I attended a narcotics anonymous (NA) group. The NA group took place in Bayonne New Jersey in a room in the back of church. Having the meeting in a church is fitting considering the 12-step principles have a lot to do with spirituality, faith, and divine intervention. The session that I attended was on a Monday night from 7:30pm to approximately 9:30pm. In my opinion, the duration of the group was too long.
If more people were aware of the dangers of heroin use, such as using while pregnant, while on prescribed medications, with dirty needles, or even possible death, more people would be likely to not partake in the use of the drug.
Alcoholism and drug addiction have obvious and well documented effects on the substance abusers.
