The Rhode Island Colony was one of the 13 original colonies in America, which were divided into three regions including the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. The Rhode Island Colony was one of four in the New England Colonies, which also included the New Hampshire Colonies, the Connecticut Colony, and the Massachusetts Colony. The Rhode Island Colony was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, and was an English colony until 1776 when it joined the other colonies in a rebellion against Great Britain for independence. Rhode Island was give its name by Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer who named it 'Roodt Eylandt' because of the red clay lining the island's shore.
The Roanoke colony was established before Jamestown in August of 1587. It was located off the coast of what is today North Carolina. There were two trips taken to the colony before they finally took a group of citizens off. The first one was for the explorers and the second one was for the people who took maps and founded the area. The man in charge of the colony was Sir Walter Raleigh. This was the man who appointed John White as governor of the colony. John White's daughter was pregnant with a baby girl and gave birth on the island August 18, 1587 to the first english baby on American soil. They named her Virginia Dare. John Winthrop and Benjamin Franklin were both leaders in their time. They had very different views on common issues, which is very apparent in the works used in the document provided for this paper. The two men had differences in topics such as; logical thinking, religion, and views on government control. In 1620, one hundred and two Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower, hoping that they would make a new start in America. The Pilgrims came from England, and after many days of searching, they found the Cape Cod Harbor. Once they found an area with the necessities of living, they settled and named it Plymouth Colony. While on the Mayflower, the Mayflower Compact was written and signed by the men on board. This document provided structure for self-government, and it was the origin for American politics today. The Roanoke colony was located on the Roanoke Island, in Dare County. This is where North Carolina is located today. In 1584, explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the first Europeans to set view the island. They were sent to that particular region by Sir Walter Raleigh with the assignment of exploring the extensive sounds and estuaries in hunt of an ideal location for settlement.
