Will, based on your above post I think you have a good grasp on citing, finding good resources, and plagiarizing. By re-reading the book I also found the rhetorical situation chapter very helpful. When writing I ask myself specific questions based on the rhetorical situations to help me stay on topic within my area of research and writing. I also try to find resources that correlate with my rhetorical situations, so that I am finding information that correctly relates to my topic. As you also stated, I try to use sources from sites ending in “.gov” or “.edu” so that I know the sources are reliable. Another good point you made was to write all the sources you use so that you can easily revisit them or cite them. I instead like to add sources
to my reference page as I go along, and then recheck it once I finish my paper to make sure everything is in the correct format. In the past I wasn’t really aware of what exactly plagiarism was and just how important it was. Plagiarism was stressed over and over but I didn’t really understand how to avoid it until I took ENG 111. Just as you said the biggest way to avoid plagiarism is to have a proper citation as well as bibliography. I like that you stated a writer should fully understand the entire text before they apply it to their papers because this is a crucial part in being able to summarize, paraphrase, and quoting. Often times I find myself not understanding what my sources are saying but this only contributes to me using others words and ideas. I also agree that it is often easier to quote an author’s work, then discuss how you feel about it rather than trying to paraphrase their thoughts.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
One of the most important aspects of writing, according to the AACU writing rubric, concerns sources and evidence (“Writing Rubric” 2015). The rubric clearly states that an author must use “sources to support ideas in the writing…quotes, if applicable, are generally accurately placed. Citations are correctly formatted in MLA or APA” (2015). The Visual Rhetorical Analysis assignment, for English 1002, demonstrates the trouble I experienced with this significant area in writing (Brizek, “Advertising” 2015). Therefore, the revised version of the Visual Rhetorical Analysis demonstrates improvement in the use of sources and evidence as well as in citations, an essential are of writing, because the revisions illustrate proper citations as well as a stronger use of sources, as required by the writing rubric (Brizek, “Advertising” 2015; Brizek, “Revision” 2015; “Writing Rubric 2015).
The article I have chosen for my rhetorical analysis is #Gamergate Trolls Aren’t Ethics Crusaders; They’re a hate group because it seemed interesting. The reason I was drawn to this article was because of the title, I was interested to know what it meant. This article, written by Jennifer Allaway, is about gamergate, an online gaming community, and the hate they show towards others. Jennifer does research on sexism in videogames and how it correlates to the gamers that play these games. Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
All I had ever known was MLA so it was quite a shock when I found out I would have to learn how to cite in APA. The first thing I did when I found out how we were going to cite our papers was go to Easybib to have the website to it for me. Turns out Easybib wants you to pay them if you want your sources cited in APA format. Once I found that out I scoured the web to find a website that could do it for me. I could not find a dependable site anywhere so I had to go look in the english book on how to cite. When I got to the section on citing sources in my book I realized that this is where I should have went right from the start. The book had every type of citation you would ever have to use. But even after I found out how to properly cite my sources, it was still another question for me
In my final copy my citations were riddled with mistakes, and Professor Wilkinson made me fix them and then resubmit it. I’m really glad that she did that because if she hadn’t I would 've never have learned how to cite the proper way. In the final clean copy of this draft you can see that I cited all of my sources correctly. This was also the first time I had to use in text citations, I messed up a little on the formatting of them, but I corrected it for future assignments. Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
However, in the case of the Dead Man Walking paper plagiarism is not the problem, the problem is incorrectly citing quotes. For example, by not putting the sources on the work cited paper properly will cause downgrading. A simple fix to this problem is to double check each source and make sure that it correctly formated on the work cited page. Embedding quotes is a necessity in order to explain them but also to make sure the quote is not by itself without any of the student’s words to introduce it. Quotes should not come out of nowhere, similar to what happens in the essay “The Price of Justice”, in order to correct this error is to ensure there is a link from one quote or analysis to the next. This will improve the overall quality of the paragraph, and effectiveness of the evidence. By checking the list multiple times to ensure the quotes are accurately embedded and cited, the redrafted paper will be easier to understand, and have correctly cited
When considering the rhetorical situation you will need to make sure that your purpose demonstrate the depth of your research and your readers will be able to track your sources and that these sources are reliable. The audience should know about the resources and you should be an unbiased describer or you should communicate a particular assessment about the resources you provided. There should be connections from each annotation if it’s available on or offline. A strategy that maybe helpful is the resources that your readers find worthwhile in examining your subject.
From the image analysis essay to the final essay I was able to learn proper MLA citations and citing sources in my essay. I also learned how to correctly use a quote as a source. Next, I worked on integrating a source into a conversation. This can be seen in my synthesis essay when I said “Representative George Miller is a Democrat from California who serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee. One program that he strongly supports and helped write out the policies for is the ‘Middle Class Jumpstart’ action plan. The last thing a student can do to avoid plagiarism is to check over their paraphrasing and quoting to make sure that they haven’t missed anything that may make their paper violate the plagiarism rule. Always cite sources used to gather information and sources used to incorporate graphs, tables, and etc. into the paper.
