“Our main story tonight concerns breast implants. Some are against them, others believe they’re fine in rare cases, and many believe you should be able to get them whenever the fuck you want. Sorry, did I say breast implants? I meant abortions.” In this particular episode of John Oliver’s show Last Week Tonight, John takes a serious yet humors look at abortion laws. The debate on abortion and abortion laws has always been controversial. The whole debate boils down to whether a person is pro-choice or pro-life. Within American society, there are plenty of citizens who think abortion is wrong and should not exist. He also shows his audience how far abortion laws will go in order to have clinics shut down. In order to emphasize the absurdity of America abortion laws, John Oliver uses humor to surprise and shock people who are pro-life into recognizing the absurdity of their position, while also using humor to further engage people who are already pro-choice into understanding these laws as well. John Oliver supports his argument of how absurd these laws are by saying, with humor, “State laws closed 70 abortion clinics in 2010” and “Mississippi now has four times as many S’s as it has abortion clinics”. Now in many states like Mississippi, there is only one clinic due to these laws.
