Recently illegal immigration has become a very pressing issue among people. Many people around the borders are being greatly affected by the issue and think immediate action needs to be taken to put a stop to the issue. The Documentary Border War: Battle Over Illegal Immigration takes a stand on the issue using many examples of pathos, ethos, and logos to try and persuade people that illegal immigration is a very serious issue and we need to put a stop to it. This documentary follows the lives of people who have been affected by illegal immigration, and explains how they feel about the issue. Another way that people can look at the issue of illegal immigration is through the eyes of the immigrants, and the reasons why they might be trying migrate to another country. The documentary Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary focuses on the issue from this point of view. This documentary uses pathos and logos to show the lives and hardships of those people who are trying to migrate to a new country. Although Wetback used many examples of pathos and logos to show the struggles of the migrants, Border War did a better job showing pathos by following the lives of people who were affected by the illegal immigrants they were also very persuasive with ethos by following credible people. They did a very good job of incorporating ethos into in the documentary Border War by following the lives of people who are credible and whose point of view can be trusted. The first guy the documentary followed was federal agent Jose Maheda. Jose worked on the border between Mexico and the U.S. in Arizona. The fact alone that he is a federal agent gives him credibility, but another things that helps his credibility is the fact he was still respectful to the i... ... middle of paper ... ...ust their opinion on things and not giving the other point of view. It would’ve been better if they would’ve given the opposite side of the story as well not just their point of view because it makes one wonder how much of it can be trusted. Both of these documentaries did a good job incorporating pathos into their stories, but the lack of ethos in Wetback made it lose credibility. The way that Border War portrayed the lives of those people who have been personally effected by illegal immigration, and the way the people they followed where very credible resources added much to the documentary making it very persuasive. Eugene V. Debs, the United State’s most influential union leader and avid socialist gives light to many issues including presidency, systems of society, and most importantly the unemployed in his speech “The Issue”. Debs was imprisoned in the 1890s for illegally encouraging a railroad strike, he also was sentenced to 10 years for his discouragement to the United States’ involvement in World War I. Debs has been a remarkable figure in the socialist party and had influenced so many. In Eugene Debs’ speech, Debs’ uses rhetorical appeal to relate to and convince his audience of the “issues” in the United
Several states allow undocumented aliens to use their resources for free regardless of their lack of healthcare insurance. This causes a debt that must in turn be solved by increased taxes. It forces people to make a decision of granting them citizenship or remove them from the country all together. Both of these options would be both costly but time and resource consuming. Thousands upon thousands of dollars are spent every year patrolling and protecting the border but these immigrants still find ways into the country. If there were to be a more open or lenient border between the United States and Mexico and immigrants were granted citizenship, the country would end up saving incredible amounts of money. New problems would surface as a result though. The citizens that want to remove them from the country support their stance from the basis that if we allow the immigrants to stay in the country we may begin to lose jobs. This is due to a flooded market of uneducated unskilled laborers from foreign countries that are willing to work for less wages as long as they can secure a job. This perspective that the illegal immigrants would take jobs was quickly corrected due to its overly exaggerated basis by a liberally fueled population. It was stated in the film that even though these immigrants would
Despite the negatives the film to me also had some positives as well. I loved how the director showed the many scenes of people and the scenes of farming as well as dust. Even though there was a lot of music the style went well with the pictures and helped with some of the pictures that were put in there as well. Overall the documentary to me was not so good
Wetback: the Undocumented immigrant Documentary is an excellent film by Arturo Pereze Torres and Heather Haynes. The undocumented immigrant documentary is an eye opening, showing immigrants who go in search of the “ American Dream.” This film showed immigrants are an unstoppable a river of humanity that no amount of police force can stop them.
In “Trouble Down South”, Jake Richey describes the problems with immigration and the ultimatum that Immigration must be resolved. Immigration has been a serious problem for an incredibly long time now. However, it is still continuing to be a problem, whether it is just primarily that United States citizens are losing their jobs to “undocumented workers” or just the fact of it being that there are “11 million people living in the shadows.” (Immigration). Due to the lack of true enforcement of the regulation of illegal immigrants, there has been a fault in the immigration system.
The documentary tells the story of globalization from personal perspectives Carmen and Lourdes and a dynamic group of Mexican maquiladora workers who work towards creating solutions to the complexities of life in a globalized and polluted city. Each having the opportunity to tell their story and representation. The implications of liberty and freedom say to have implicated neoliberal practices which are proven false through this documentary.
I can imagine that by assembling such a diverse pool of interviewees all of different nationalities, race, ethnicity, age, and gender would be very thought-provoking and fascinating. I would try to compile all the responses in way that reflects all of that diverseness. It is my perception that people have a very narrow-minded view on immigration, so I think that this would be a very good use of documentary
30 days Immigration was aired as part of a TV series in 2006. This program reveals each side of the immigration issue from why the Gonzalez family felt they had to leave Tepatitlan Mexico, while also, presenting Frank George hardline stance on rounding up all the illegal immigrants and sending them back
In Buffalo, New York on January 26, 1883, a 25 year old Theodore Roosevelt delivers the speech “Duties of American Citizenship.” Young but extremely accomplished, Roosevelt has graduated from Harvard and is currently serving on the New York State Assembly. Just two years before this speech, a man who had been denied a government job based on his political allegiances assassinated President James Garfield. So, the Civil Service Reform is passed in 1883 to ensure government jobs would be rewarded based off of merit rather than politics. It is this reform that spurs Theodore Roosevelt to deliver this speech, asking the American people to participate in and clean up the political system by utilizing the rhetorical appeals
In today’s world we tend to be caught up in our own personal bubbles. We don’t realize what goes on outside of our world and the myriad of subcultures that exist. The main problem with this is, once we become aware of the people that live outside of our culture and our norms, we tend to not understand their lifestyle and think that they are abnormal or psychotic. Through the various documentaries that we have explored this semester, I have experienced a change in emotion and thought. Every documentary we watched did not make sense to me. However, I realized that once you really dig deep and try to understand these people and their motives, you can uncover the way they affect our society.

I came across your documentary, Return to El Salvador, on www.huffingtonpost.com while researching stories about immigration for my Original Series for Television titled Meal Ticket. I must say wow! I became interested immediately and went to your site since I too have generated a keen interest as to why people of Latin America go through treacherous obstacles to leave their native lands. Meal Ticket conveys a solid storyline about migrant workers from Latin America and immigration. Many of my characters were based on natives of El Salvador who have come to America in search of a meal ticket.
Illegal immigration is a pending issue in modern day America, and most Americans aren’t the biggest fans of illegal immigration. The Mexican-American border has become a huge controversy in today’s political affairs, it is still a very heated argument at this very moment in time. Although there are some benefits, the repercussions surpass any benefit; illegal immigrants in today’s world are taking jobs away, creating asthma and allergy problems for themselves here in America, but worst of all, all of the political leaders in today’s society are using the Mexican-American border as a tool to sway votes in their favor and giving the immigrants “free passes” to come through to the country without even having to pay taxes.
Immigration has been the topic of heated discussions for many years. With sides arguing how immigration is bad for the U.S. economy and then other sides counteracting those arguments with the idea of immigrants being people to and how they carry the right to find happiness. With those arguments Missouri State has really opened the eyes of many to the idea of immigration, and have helped them form their own opinion on it, by assigning the common reader Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. The common reader gives us an inside look at what it is to be an immigrant, the risks they take, and the ultimate reward that can be achieved from it.
Documentaries and films can be utilized in many different ways in order to positively contribute to solving our most dire social and environmental issues facing humanity and our planet. The film “Elemental” is primarily a descriptive documentary that shadows the life of three individuals in three very different regions of the world that are connected by their passion to confront some the prevalent ecological threats pressing their homelands. Additionally, the documentary provides some instrumental insight by informing viewers of how to effectively take part in environmental activism through demonstrations, fund-raising, community organizing, campaigning, and political protests.
