Slavery is a very sensitive subject. Many people are not able to even read about it without feeling offended. However, I thought that in reading Ama, it was actually very easy to read and understand.
I believe that reading non-fiction gives the reader more of a personal feel. There were millions of slaves that were transported across the Atlantic. In Reversing Sail, it gives you the straight facts that they know about the people, the counties and routes that were taken. Most people would find it boring when reading about the straight facts and information as if they were reading from an Encyclopedia. I believe that reading non-fiction is great to a point, it is better to link it with a personal or fictional story.

When reading about the institution of slavery in the United States, it is easy to focus on life for the slaves on the plantations—the places where the millions of people purchased to serve as slaves in the United States lived, made families, and eventually died. Most of the information we seek is about what daily life was like for these people, and what went “wrong” in our country’s collective psyche that allowed us to normalize the practice of keeping human beings as property, no more or less valuable than the machines in the factories which bolstered industrialized economies at the time. “Slavery is an American embarrassment” (Breen/Innes 3). The history of slavery can be very complex. While most people believe that slaves did not have the chance to advance, Breen and Innes prove that theory wrong. At least slaves had the opportunity to purchase their freedom on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Breen and Innes also point out that the relationships between blacks and whites are also not how we originally thought they were. They were not one sided relationships; they could be considered co-dependent relationships.

I do not agree with Richler opinion when he says fiction is a waste of time. Reading a piece of information or any novel contribute to human being educational enrichment, never a waste of time. Fiction movies are entertaining, I enjoy science fiction movies because they are interesting and mostly because they are short and easy to follow.
When a person reads a book, they should read it as to amuse them, but also look between the lines for the purpose of the book. Every author, whether they’re writing fiction of non-fiction, has a moral behind their story. Every book is like a picture, a piece of art. Yes, you admire it, but you would have to squint a little bit, twist your head in any angle, and try to find what message the author or painter was trying to send out with their piece of work.

The mother pushes the son to embrace more of a traditional lifestyle by taking over the fathers fishing business, while on the other hand the father pushes the son to live more autonomously in an unconstrained manner. “The Boat” focuses on the father and how his personality influences the son’s choice on how to live and how to make decisions that will ultimately affect his life. In Alistair MacLeod’s, “The Boat”, MacLeod suggest that although dreams and desires give people purpose, the nobility of accepting a life of discontentment out weighs the selfishness of following ones own true desires. In the story, the father is obligated to provide for his family as well as to continue the fishing tradition that was inherited from his own father. I have previously watched movies and read books on this kind of subject which always resulted in the cruelty of blacks, or the poverty and separation in schools and communities. I was not aware that with the rise of Islam and the conflicts between Muslims and Christians, the holding of prisoners during war and their use of slaves is what reintroduced the practice in European society which is where it began to rise. Style is crucial to having a book that appeals to the reader’s attention span, and if there is no connection to the reader through the author’s personality, then this book is not successful due to the lack of a personal voice from the author.
