In today’s society, America is represented by the young, the cool, and most importantly, the active. In past generations, the elderly were looked upon in admiration for their accomplishments in life. Now, they are tossed aside, due to their inability to work in this day and age. In a summary of the fiction piece, Time Machine, by H. G. Wells, there is tell how “...in the land of everlasting youth, the problem of ageing-if it is a problem- has been apparently resolved. A genre of utopian and dystopian writers raise often unanswered questions about the place of the elderly in future society. In the past, as in the present, that experience has often become grim. This book is about, bluntly, the killing of old people...” Although the death has not occurred yet in the modern age, the lack of respect has gone up substantially. This is shown in one text in particular. In the nonfiction, A Celebration of Grandfathers, by Rudolfo A. Anaya, his grandfather’s quotes give insights on the signs of respect, hard work, and wisdom.

Growing up with such a strong role model, as Anaya describes him, has altered his personal values over a long period of time. He saw his grandfather and other elders as beautiful and strong, all of them being full of wisdom and stories to share,”The old people I remember from my childhood were strong in their beliefs, and as we lived daily with them we learned a wise path of life to follow.” (Anaya) He believes that old people are willful and strong and should be looked up to. Towards the end of the essay, Anaya brings up how old people are portrayed as smiling and happy in the media, and how they’re also always trying to sell something. During the holocaust, a lot of ageism was shown amongst the Jewish people, particularly in Elie Wiesel's Night. Elderly characters could have prevented this discrimination by lying about their age. Unfortunately ageism is still present today, but elderly can counteract the discrimination by changing their attitudes to be more positive and kind. It is essential this issue is discussed, because it is an unfair limitation.

Like every human, Grandma India sometimes focuses more on herself than others’ feelings and can be too harsh when reprimanding her grandchildren. An instance of the first flaw is on a Monday after school, when the family is playing Monopoly. “She didn’t look up. She was preoccupied with examining her next move on the board. We were already resigned to the fact that she would skunk us all once again. ‘Right, how so?’ she mumbled, not taking her attention off the game for even one instant” (Pattillo 136). In this quote, we see that Grandma India is too preoccupied with the game to pay attention to Melba’s telling of her school day. David deSilva gives an enlightening contextual study of first century Mediterranean culture. deSilva believes that all culture delivers the framework for all communication, and the New Testament writings is no different in how the culture provides the framework for communication.

Aging is a sensitive topic for many, with ageism being incredibly prevalent, as it has such a negative connotation that is attached to it (Hooyman, Kawamoto, & Kiyak, 2015). What does it mean to age in society today, when the baby-boomer population is starting to reach their old-old age status? (Hooyman et al., 2015). In order to break down stereotypes and understand what exactly it means to age within our current day society, I interviewed a married couple of 29 years, whom wished to remain anonymous, regarding their views on aging. The gentleman is sixty-three years old, and his wife is in her fifties. She was not the main focus on my interview, the gentleman was, but his wife was able to chime in and provided me with her two-sense every once in a while.

The story talks about the importance of listening to your elders and the unique knowledge that comes from embracing the past. Anaya’s grandfather’s life is filled with work and patience. The kind of values that many today have forgotten about. He passes on his knowledge to his grandson. The three important messages that Anaya’s grandfather has are, all things die, say what you mean, and have patience.

These works illustrate the need to allow cultures to thrive and be different from the more powerful and influential bodies on the earth. Orwell and Marlow tell their stories in order to explain how they realized the truth about corruptive government as far back as the Nineteenth Century. This should serve as a reminder now as a new age dawns upon mankind, where everything can be bought and sold. The basic message is the same, however, that we use power destructively “to avoid looking [like fools].”
Hello, I’m Tala Ashour and I am going to be giving a tribute speech to my role model. How many of you would like to go back in time just to be able to meet a wonderful person you’ve never got the chance to meet? A wise woman who is known as Shannon Alder once said; “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” I would go back in time to meet the most admirable person in my life which is my grandfather because I fell in love with him but never met him. My deceased grandfather was a caring, genuine and humble human being that wanted nothing but a happy, comfortable and acceptable life.
The descriptive language incorporated in this narrative helps to describe the physical characteristics of the elderly and allows the reader to understand the extent of the speaker’s fear of aging. Throughout this work the reader is greeted with various characteristics that are described in a stereotypical fashion to emphasize the minute flaws in the appearance of the elderly; “ash hair, toad hands, prune face dried into lines” (Larkin 1426).
