Where you live should not determine whether you live, and the PA profession was created to improve the availability of healthcare in rural and other underserved areas. The word “job” comes across as hard work, and chores, but the thing that is often overlooked is the deeper meaning that comes with it. Many people may look at the residential advisor position and believe they are only there to get the residents in trouble when they break rules. After my observations, interviews and overall reflection on their subculture, I came to the realization that being a residential advisor is much more than writing residents up for alcohol or noise complaints. It is about the relationships built and the idea that you’re helping others the way you were, or weren’t, during your freshman year in the dorms. The RAs may be there for the free room and board as well as the pay, but they are initially there to make the best they can out of the resident’s dorm experience.

Being a resident assistant is a tough job. It is a job that has made a stronger and more confident person this past year. It is not a suitable job for students who are afraid of confrontation. There are two types of resident assistants that I have observed. The first type of resident assistant is the one who will give a violation to any resident for the smallest of things. The second type is the one who tries to be friends with everyone and sometimes lets things slide. Finding a balance between the two is somewhat of a rare feat, but can be achieved. There will be times when a resident assistant is required to write someone up whom they consider to be their friend. There is always an ethical choice that comes with autority on whether or not you should turn a person in or to turn a blind eye. This exact sitatution happened with my fellow resident assistant; Kimmy. Resident assistants are required to go on rounds in their assigned dorm buildings around once a week. However, that does not mean that they can't report residents when they are misbehaving at any time during the day. One night when Kimmy was walking down her hallway she noticed that there was a loud commotion going on in one of the rooms on the first floor. Upon knocking on the door Kimmy observed that there were a large amount of people in the room and alcohol was clearly visible. West Chester is a dry campus and because of that no alcohol is allowed anywhere on campus regardless of how old you are. The first step of action is to call public safety since they deal with any alcohol related incidents. When I worked in my school as a tutor of English as a Second Language for students from a community school in Muscat, I realized the importance of a strong leader who could organize, command respect, and be able to work well with others. These ideas were further enforced by my month long internship at Novartis Pharmaceutical (Accounts and Finance Department and Human Resources Department).
Excellence in a learning environment can only be achieved by acquiring and maintaining several aspects of a person’s identity, those being: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Throughout my high school career I have consistently demonstrated these characteristics, having moved three times during my high-school experience, going through one virtual school, and two physical schools, it has been a challenge to be a part of teams and groups; yet I have thrived in the programs I have been able to join, showing that I have the potential for leadership, As well as having a sense of scholarship, service and character.
Williams. I was thrilled when I came to work here to find that Mrs. Williams is the type of respected but approachable leader that is my preferred leadership style. I am grateful to have her as my mentor for this learning experience, as I feel we match closely in leadership qualities. My strength as a leader is the supportive leadership style. Like Mrs. Williams, I feel that building relationships and a culture of respect and trust is key to being an effective leader. As a teacher, I spend a good amount of time at the beginning of each year building a rapport with students and families which helps me connect with the students. As a leader of teachers I feel that being supportive of my faculty and staff will be most beneficial in helping develop a productive work environment and develop a necessary level of trust with all of the staff under my supervision. I also want to be participative and achievement oriented. I have always had a drive to be successful in all I do. I am confident that this skill will carry over to my role as a leader. The one area I will need to work on is being directive when necessary. I am not always good at being direct and want to protect others feelings. I will learn from Mrs. Williams as I continue through this program how to be directive with faculty and staff, as well as disgruntled
My goal in the next couple of years is to take on the added challenge of attaining my master’s degree in business administration. This will afford me the opportunity to move up the organizational ladder on my job as well as give me a stronger voice to help shape the future of technology in my company. Ultimately, I believe it will afford me the opportunity to give back to the community, by investing in the lives of high school students and young adult by re-igniting their desire to regain aplomb.
