John Green’s novel, The Fault in Our Stars, depicts the life of a terminal cancer patient named Hazel. She never wanted to live life until the day she met cancer amputee, Augustus Waters, who completely changes her outlook on life. A story of their struggle, not only with the typical adolescent emotions, but with cancer as well. Veering from predictable plots about teen love, Green immerses the audience in a heartbreaking portrayal of life cut too short. Through excellent characterization, brilliant plot twists, and outstanding detailed chapters, this novel achieves a merit that goes beyond the stars.

Green’s plot twists are like being on a roller coaster of emotion. The transition into each plot slowly pulls you to the climax, inching forward with a jerky, and heart pounding ascension, until you’re completely engulfed in this life of pain, hardship, joy and love speeding down the tracks. The story starts with the life of a young girl, wanting to live the life of her favorite book character. She wants to stay alive for her mom, dad and friends, who just want to be free of the pain that cancer brings. She soon meets Augustus, whose outlook on life changes her perspective and she no longer wants to just live, but be remembered. The storyline of Augustus and Hazel changes the mindset of all those who read it, because the plot-twists flips the world upside down. In young adult life, the teenagers think that adults cannot help them with their problems, that what they are going through is so unique to them and it has never happened to anyone else before. Given that Augustus does die before he becomes an adult shows that for some young adult's life can be so uncontrollable and not end up in a positive manner. They may not become the adults they wish to be or they may be forced to give up on being youthful. That even the brightest stars die out, but that you can still try to enjoy whatever time you have as a young adult and stop trying to control every aspect of your life. Corliss goes on to say that “ It allows Hazel and Augustus to pack the luster of a lifetime -- first love, trip to Europe, meeting a famous author, last love -- into what may be their only summer” (Corliss 2014). We are born into this world with the realization that life is hard and that life is like a box of chocolates and it is hard to take it at face value. The majority of our time is spent trying to answer an endless stream of questions only to find the answers to be a complex path of even more questions. This film tells the story of Harold, a twenty year old lost in life and haunted by answerless questions. Harold is infatuated with death until he meets a good role model in Maude, an eighty year old woman that is obsessed with life and its avails. However, Maude does not answer all of Harold’s questions but she leads him to realize that there is a light at the end of everyone’s tunnel if you pursue it to utmost extremes by being whatever you want to be. Nevertheless, they are a highly unlikely match but they obviously help each other in many ways in the film.

The character Augustus strives to not allow the cancer become his identity, rather to be remembered for something bigger than his illness. Augustus changes a lot from when he is first introduced at the beginning of the book till the final chapters before his death. When Hazel Grace first meets Augustus Waters at the support group she describes him as an attractive, strong and normal boy. It’s later during support group she finds out that he Augustus, once suffered from cancer and is now in remission. He attends the support group only as a companion for his friend Isaac who is a few days away from losing his eyesight. As the support group discussions go on, Augustus is asked what his fears are and he replies “Oblivion” (Green, 12) Augustus wants his life to mean more, rather than to just be forgotten when he dies. Cancer limits her chances at being a normal teenage girl with a normal life. As reluctant as she was to go to support group, she meets other teenagers going through the same stuff. Hazel gets to experience the flirting, adventure, and excitement of teenage life. She allows herself to be immature and careless. Gus’s death reminds her how unfair the world is but she doesn't regret her choices. In her eulogy at the funeral, Hazel says “I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.” (Green 260). This quote shows she doesn't regret becoming close to him; even with the unfortunate fallout she’s thankful for the time and experiences. Hazel matures because of her relationship. She got the chance at “normal” and love. Caring for someone with cancer helped her mature.
The story symbolizes character’s in different way that can be interpreted to analyze. Harry Ashfield, a 5 year old kid, dies in a tragic way where his belief and faith lead him to what seemed a pointless death. His literally taking of Bevel Summers words lead him to God, where he wanted to be after living a life so empty and concerning The story represents actions and events that help us visualize what each character symbolizes, to conclude to a characters faith, belief, and weakness/strengths. Flannery O Connor helps us to connect with the story and possibly think about how are religion or beliefs affected us towards conflicts. Having personal connection is our main focus and the characters in the story may represent us or something in our lives.
It shows strong themes of friendship and what one would do to save a friend in danger, like when May searches for the clues left behind by Libby. It’s a great read for anyone who enjoys a witty, fast-paced and exciting
Green uses various literary elements, a few symbolic scenes, constant visual action along with the clever use of “action-reaction” format to let the text flow hence creating potential tension to make sure that the story isn’t dead at any point. The action is mentioned and the protagonist’s immediate reaction keeps the reader involved and complements each other heavily. Green drags the reader right into the text from the very beginning, and very skilfully keeps the reader engaged to the end of the introduction. With varied techniques to convey his message, Green is able to summarize the novel and grab attention in the few opening pages itself.
Fans of Green’s work were ecstatic to see one of their favorite novels on the big screen. This was the first of Green’s works to be brought to life. After seeing the movie, some of Green’s fans were not too pleased. Some were absolutely heartbroken; a majority of fans even went as far as to call the film a disappointment. Upon watching the film, I realized that there were many details from the book that were left out.

The reader had to keep reading to see what Hassan meant about the solution to Colin’s problem. The solution ended up being a road trip.
John Green’s wonderful yet tragic best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars tells a heart-wrenching story of two teenage cancer patients who fall in love. Augustus Waters and Hazel Lancaster live in the ordinary city of Indianapolis, where they both attend a support group for cancer patients. Falling in love at first sight, the two are inseparable until Augustus’s cancer comes out of remission, turning Hazel’s world upside. This is one of the best young-adult fiction novels of the year because it keeps readers on the edge of their seat, uses themes to teach real life lessons, and uses a realistic point of view instead of the cliché happy ending of most books.
