G.R.E.A.T. ESSAY-One Direction
One Direction is the biggest pop band in the world, arguably compared to the former Beatles or Backstreet Boys, however those groups don’t come anywhere close to the five(currently four) men by the name of (in photo order from left to right) Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, (no longer in the band) and Harry Styles, that have captured the hearts of millions of people of all ages and genders all around the world. Several of their songs symbolism meanings of friendship, love forgiveness, acceptance and the simple enjoyment of life. For example, the song Diana from One Direction’s third album Midnight Memories is about lifting someone up when they’re feeling down as stated in the lyrics “Let me be the one to light a fire inside those eyes/ you’ve been lonely/you don’t even know me/but I can feel you crying/Diana/let me be the one to lift up your heart and save your life/I don’t think you even realize baby you’d be saving mine.”(One Direction) These lyrics are only a prime example of how many songs written by One Direction are truly empowering and inspirational for their …show more content…
They’ve gone to Ghana to volunteer and help with underprivileged children and families which brought them a new perspective on life. Liam talks about how he met a woman and her family who were having a naming ceremony for their new baby and he states “She was lying on a single mattress on the floor inside the tent and we went to meet her dad. He shook her our hands, and then turned to Harry and said “Please, please take her away from here.’ I was just gutted. It was really hard. In fact it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to listen to in my life. I just couldn’t deal with it.”(who we are) That was just one example of how One Direction’s trip Ghana changed them for the better, however all of the boys were impacted greatly by it. Another example is a statement made by Harry who said “I think in life it’s important that you have experiences like that. With the position that we’re In with this band, we’re lucky enough to see things like that and learn from them. I think that it’s important that you try to make a difference, even if it’s only a small difference. Symbolism, it can be used for many things, such as expressing meaning, feelings, or emotions through an object by the author. It can be simple things that can show such emotion. Even flowers can have symbolic references, such as roses. A rose symbolizes romance and love. A Lillie may stand for beauty of temptation.
One of these causes, the Miracle League of the South Hills is particularly close to my heart. A friend of my mother has a child who is severely autistic, and all my life my family and I have volunteered for many organizations to help special needs children, of all of these Miracle League has left the greatest impression on me. Ghandi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” and that is exactly what has happened to me during my long term association with the Miracle League. I truly believe my association with this organization has helped me to become a better person, more kind, caring, outgoing, and energetic. Miracle League was founded on the belief that, “Every child deserves a chance to play baseball.” Miracle League operates specially designed fields on which they bring the game of baseball to children who may have never had the opportunity to play on a real field. Symbolism is a part of human nature; it has been a form of communication long before the written language. Ideas are conveyed through symbolism. It is frequently used in pop culture today. Many songs and music videos have symbolism in them. The music video for “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus is symbolic for a destructive relationship. Her being stripped to nothing but her skin represents her vulnerability and how love destroyed her; she emotionally becomes ‘stripped and naked’. The wrecking ball represents how she feels. Miley Cyrus becomes the building and the wrecking ball crumbles her to pieces, leaving her in the middle of it all. Another song with symbolism is “Love Club” by Lorde. When Lorde says “love club,” she is using it as a symbol for equality. I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
One example of a teen who made a difference is is Adin Lykken. Adin made woofin and hoofin which was a 5k race for people and their pets. It was made to gain money to be donated to pet shelters and to stop animal cruelty. Adin always loved pets and hated animal cruelty too, so he put both of them together to try to stop cats, dogs, and other animals from being abused. It is $25 for runners and $20 for people running with their pets. The event has raised $16,000 dollars for Friends of Dupage county animal care and control. This shows that you can make a community better just by doing little things which might grow big in the future! (Hanc).

Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
One of the concerts that I have attended was One Direction’s. One direction was formed by a group of boys from London in 2010. These young men were also known as Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. The band started off from a British talent show on television called the X Factor. During the audition, the boys were eliminated as individuals, but Simon Cowell saw great potential in these young men as a group. He decided to make it happen by giving them another chance to perform together, and indeed they became famous ever since the formation of the English-Irish boy band One Direction.
