The profession of carpentry has been around for many centuries. The most valuable job during the 18th century was a carpenter. The city of Williamsburg was built from the ground up by carpenters. Many of the structures built at that time are still standing today. The demand of homes and shops were at a rapid increase around this time. Many people started looking into becoming carpenters for work and a steady income. This just shows the impact that carpenters have had in our past. Wood was something that was very easy to get and easy to use for people around this time. The chopping down of trees would include tools such as a saw and a broadax. Usually these tools were also made by wood that was chopped from trees. Carpenter have a various set of tools that they use when on the job. One of the main tools they use is a saw. There are different types of saws that can be used. A backsaw is used to help cut cross-grain and leave a smoother work piece. This is usually use to help the carpenters that want to cut trim or molding. A milter box isn’t actually a saw but it has a mounted backsaw on it. This usually can be adjusted to how they want it for that specific job. It also helps you get a specialized cut. This is mostly used to finish cuts. A coping saw is another type of saw that carpenters use. When trying to cut the thickness of a piece of wood or trying to make an angle is when this saw is best used. Besides saws there are hammers and other small tools that are used. A type of hammer used is a claw hammer. A claw hammer helps pry the nails out of the wood.
