Career and College Research Paper Identification and description of career The career I chose to write about is nursing because since I was a little girl I have always felt antipathy taking care of people and learning about the human anatomy. Both of my parents believe that being a registered nurse will most suit me in the future. “Being a registered nurse provides coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members” (“Summary”). If a nurse works for a hospital then they are almost always on-call and have interminable hours. Most of them will work for 12+ hours, go home to sleep for 4 hours, then have to go back to work another 12 hour shift. They will work just about any day of the year including nights, holidays, and weekends (“Summary”). Although the majority of them are in the United States, a lot of them work in poor countries. A travel nurse will go to those countries and help kids and adults get the medical attention they don't have. Most nurses that work in hospitals will re-bandage wounds, fill out patients charts, and/or accompany the doctor or surgeon when they have a consultation with the patient(s). Now there are also nurses that will only work with patients that have a heart disease or newborn babies. If I were to become a nurse like I've dreamt to be, I would most likely choose to be a trauma nurse. They are only a two year school so I will not be getting a Bachelor's Degree there (Nelson, Sherryl. Personal interview. 1 Dec, 2017). The campus I would like to attend to is in Stillwater, Oklahoma right next to Oklahoma State University's campus. Although tuition is more expensive at OSU, NOC will only cost me about $8,750 for the full two years (Nelson, Sherryl. Personal interview. 1 Dec, 2017). Now if I were to get my Bachelors Degree it would take me about four years and the tuition would be more expensive but i would have to go to a different college. All degrees and colleges have different classes but if I go here then I would be taking Biology, Psychology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Comp I and II, Government, and American History after 1877 plus many more (Nelson, Sherryl. The most exciting thing about travel nursing is that the assignments usually last 13 weeks (Travel Nursing). If an individual did not like their assignment then they have the option to come back home, on the flip side they could extend their assignment. Another great thing is that this specific kind of nurse has the option to choose where they can work whether it be Florida, Texas, New York, Washington, or even California. The only downfall is that certain cities might not be available but every state is (What is travel nursing?). My research paper is on the healthcare occupation, in particularly,the field of licensed practical nursing, also called licensed vocational nurses. In my paper, I will cover such things as the definition of career choice, certain requirements, the expected job duties and responsibilities, any additional licensure that is required. After discussing these topics, I will then point out the potential of finding a job, the ranges of salary, as well as the environment I would be working in. Finally, I will talk about the potential growth in this field and legal requirements. Now i will start with the definition of my career choice.
Some of the cons to being an RN is some of the dangers, such as being exposed to infections and disease on a daily basis (Minnesota 1). Plus, they spend a long period of time on their feet, so they are prone to back and knee injuries (American 2). Although while being an RN generally have a set schedule each week. Trauma nursing is a rewarding career that is financially beneficial, allows you to work in high intensity situations, and is appropriate for people with a personality where they have the ability to remain calm in high stress situations. In trauma nursing a beginner is already making quite a bit of money while being able to do things such as saving people’s lives. It’s a job that involves working in situations where it depends on a person and their team to save a person and it’s important to be to stay calm and respond adequately to the situation. My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field.
