A Doll’s House
Burying away how people really feel and what is going on feels easier than actually opening up to someone who may not even care. No matter how well we think we know someone, they always have their own little something to hide. People go so much deeper than what we see on the outside and there is a reason on why they are like they are. The main characters (Nora, Torvald, Krogstad, and Mrs. L) of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House suggest that nobody is truly as happy as he seems and most will go to great lengths to maintain a certain image.

They worry too much on what their peers and society will think instead of valuing their partner. Instead of Torvald being available for Nora and worried about her all he seems to care about is what she has done, saying how “thoughtless” it was, when in reality she did it for him. He is mostly worried about how society will see them now that she has “ruined their image” Torvald states, “And as far as you and me, it must appear as if everything between us were just as before-but naturally only in the eyes of the world” (Ibsen 63). Torvad, after discovering Nora’s forgery gets so mad because he thinks others will blame him for this. Each character is willing to hide a piece of who they are in order to improve how they are seen amongst their peers. Whether hiding for personal selfish gain or morally just reasons, it will never stay hidden. Secrets will all come out in the end and most likely damage relationships that mean the most to the ones being protected. Secrets are like a hidden virus: They enter the host cell and become part of the cell’s genetic material. The virus “hides” for a while and does not appear to disrupt the cells functions and could even stay inactive for years but eventually the hidden virus will make itself known and destroy all the cells it comes in contact with. Just like a hidden virus, the characters of A Doll’s House have their own secrets but eventually they come out and hurt a lot worse than just not hiding anything at all. Nora and Torvald both let the conformities of society determine their words and actions toward one another. Nora continue to let things slide with Torvald until the point where she was ready to leave therefore hurting herself, Torvald, and her kids. Mrs. Linde and Krogstad were never truly happy until they were reunited. When people are not honest with themselves they not only hurt themselves but also hurt everybody in relationships with them.
