What is representation?
Representation is how people, events and places are presented to us. This could include magazines, films or news. For a example people in TV shown, represent a certain group of people. Media rely on the audience to understand those representations and accept them. One way to understand representation is to think of a TV programme is not the same as watching something happen in real life. For example, beer commercials show the product as a component of have a party. Ads promoting perfume indicates that by using the product it makes a person sexually appealing.

When media represents a person, they focus on:
• Gender
• Age
• Ethnicity
• Nationality/culture

The first example is a ‘real man’, successful, athletic and professional mostly with a beautiful woman by his side. Another type is less popular, which is a man devoted to his family who have enough time for them.
Commercials are the powerful tool to create people’s opinions about certain things.

Relationship between Representation and Stereotypes
The relationship between representation and stereotypes is that media want people to think in a certain way. They present someone the way that viewers make judgment based on how they are shown and stereotypes that have heard or seen in commercials or news. Media thinks people will view what they are showing them in the same way and accept it based of what they know. Both men and women are represented in a certain way based on stereotypes people already know. Both representation and stereotypes have a negative impact on their audience, because people categorise people based on their race, age or
