René Lévesque first discovered radio journalism in 1938, Lévesque used this to open the minds of Francophone Québecers and taught them about the world and what it could offer. In October, 29 years later, René Lévesque founded the Mouvement Souveraineté- Association (MSA) in 1967, which later combined with the Rassemblement pour l'indépendance national (RIN) to form the Parti Québécois. René Lévesque, was the first Parti Québécois (PQ) president, and remained the leader until his resignation in 1985. Lévesque, later became premier of Québec from 1976-1985. René Lévesque’s impact on Canada was very proportionate and can still be seen today. Thorough Lévesque’s promotion of sovereignty association Canadian identity as a whole was affected, mainly by creating contending loyalties between the Québec people and Canada as a whole. This division of Canadian identity and creation of contending loyalties made many people chose a side, divide their identity to be one side or the other, and further promoting the other side’s sense of identity. But this division of loyalties was also present in Québec as many people had to decide if they were with René Lévesque’s ideas or agents René Lévesque’s ideas. This demand for sovereignty association brought a greater awareness that Francophone minorities were being overpowered and replaced with propionate English based things, such as schooling systems. Elijah Harper was once the Cree MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) for the Rupertsland constituency from March 3, 1949 – May 17, 2013. Elijah Harper was not only a Canadian politician, but a Chief too, specifically to the Red Sucker Lake community, where Harper was born. Elijah Harper was once even responsible for Native Affairs, and later on Minister of Northern Affairs. During Elijah Harper’s time in the Legislative Assembly he was present and a participating member for the Meech Lake accord. The Meech Lake Accord, was a detailed series of proposed amendments to the Constitution of Canada, created to persuade Québec to endorse the Constitution and not proceed pushing for sovereignty. This accord was meant to be negotiated and finalized by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the ten provincial premiers but was not. This was because on June 19th, 1990, Elijah Harper made a stance that abruptly ended the Meech Lake accord. In the end the Meech Lake accord was not finalized in the Manitoba Legislature, because of Elijah Harper. Elijah Harper stopped the amendments to the Canadian constitutional with a simple action, holding up an eagle feather. This action opened up for a debate on the accord which prevented it from meeting the finalized deadline after days of Harper attempting to stall the accord so it would be unable to meet the deadline.
