Social issues in Remember the Titans Racism has been in effect for the past hundreds of years and it still continues today. Everyone is human and we all have morals, there should be no mistreatment of another human being. Remember the Titans is directed by Boaz Yakin and it stars Denzel Washington as Coach Boone, Will Patton as Coach Yoast, Ryan Hurst as Gerry Bertier, and Wood Harris as Julius Campbell. This film takes place in 1971, right in the middle of the civil right movement at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The community was forced to integrate schools and the city was on the verge of destruction. The biggest social issue in the time period were racism and segregation. Both blacks and whites hated the idea and the town went crazy. Coach Boone, who is black, takes the head coaching job on the football team. At first it seems the whole football team will be black but after Coach Yoast convinces his white player to join the team even though he is not head coach any more, they join Coach Boone’s team too. Coach Boone and takes them to a summer football camp and there the white and the black boys learn to respect one another. When they come back to school they find the city and madness. The city starts to come together as the team progresses through the season and becomes successful. At the end the titans finish with a perfect season and go on to win the state championship. One of the key characters in this film is Gerry Bertier who is played by Ryan Hurst. In the beginning he has as much hate for black people as anyone else but later on he becomes one of the key characters in changing his teammates and his communities minds about the other race. Another key character is Coach Boone who is played by Denzel Washington. When Julius walks into the waiting room of the hospital Gerry’s mother tells Julius that Gerry only wants to see him. When Julius walks in Gerry’s room the nurse tells Julius that family only can visit and Gerry tells the nurse that him and Julius are brothers.
