Religious intolerance is defined as when a group, may it be religious or non-religious, specifically refuses to tolerate practices, persons or beliefs on religious grounds. The main religious intolerance that exists in America is that against the Catholics, the Muslims, and the Jews. The cartoons and pictures of religious intolerance are alike in ways, but some are very diverse in numerous ways. The United Nations upholds the right to free expression of religious beliefs according to articles 18 and 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Along with that, article 2 forbids discrimination on the basis of religion. Thanks to the United States Bill of Rights, Amendment one, people are able to practice religion as they wish. The artists will try to find common characteristics or features of the type of religion that they are drawing, and enhance them in their drawings. For example, if the artist is trying to draw a Jewish individual, the artist will emphasize a big nose, curly hair, and some would put a yarmulke (or a skullcap worn by men, typically during prayer) on their head. Jewish are known for their sneakiness and cleverness, so some artist will bring that into their drawings by putting up a sign, or the look on their faces. For a Muslim individual, the artist might draw the character with a beard, if it is a man he will probably be wearing a Thobe (the dress-like clothing that Muslim men wear), and if it is discriminating the Muslims, the artist might put dynamite on their bodies. Catholics will most likely be covered with crosses and bibles. Most of the hatred was directed toward the Indians when the Europeans first got here. The debate of which religion would be dominant was what started the “religious intolerance” predicament in America. The artists in present times will draw about racial judgments and include past events to judge the religion.
