What could possibly make a good mind turn completely evil, and a pure heart turn cold as blood? Shakespeare wrote a play titled “Macbeth” which took place in Scotland. In the classic drama, Macbeth was a brave warrior and a loyal kinsman. His mindset changed dramatically when he desired to have a seat on the throne so bad that he was willing to murder anyone in his way. The theme, good vs. evil, was shown through Macbeth’s interactions with the three witches, himself, and Lady Macbeth. To begin with, Macbeth was a noble man until he encountered three witches who turned his life upside down. The witches recited many confusing things such as, “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.” (Act I, scn i, ln 10) This quote infers that good people can truly be evil, and evil people can show some good. Lady Macbeth had said to Macbeth “Yet do I fear thy nature. It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness.” (Act I, scn v, lns 16-17) Lady Macbeth is talking to Macbeth about killing Duncan so Macbeth can reign as the new King, but Macbeth is too kind and gentle to do the deed so Lady Macbeth will be there to encourage him and talk him through the murder so he won’t back out. After the murder, Lady Macbeth said “My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white.” (Act II, scn ii, lns 63-64) Lady Macbeth had to plant the daggers on the King’s men, and she had blood all on her hands just like Macbeth. She plans on being strong about it and she isn’t going to let cowardliness overcome her like it has overtaken Macbeth. This represents good vs. evil because it obviously shows that Macbeth is too gentle and soft to kill anyone, but his wife pushes him to do it.
