In the novel, Ishmael, David Quinn describes the difference in evolution between two groups of humans, the Takers and the Leavers. In the well known stories in the book of Genesis, when God created the world, God also created man. According to the Takers, God appointed man as ruler of this world. Ishmael’s reinterpretation of Genesis highlights how the Takers’ story immerged and how they fail to realize the destruction they are causing. Ishmael starts describing the Takers story by defining what a story is and how to enact one. A story is a, “scenario interrelating man, the world, and the gods” (41). Ishmael defines enacting a story as “to live so as to make the story a reality,” (41) or living the story to make it come true. Ishmael describes
Takers have come to the assumption that humans are the main product of evolution and the world was made for them to rule. The narrator states, “my conditioning tells me-Mother Culture tells me-that living in the hands of the gods has got to be a never-ending nightmare of terror and anxiety” (227). This belief has led to catastrophic results like global warming, extinction of animals, and the slow destruction of the Earth. The Takers’ cultural ideal lead them to believe that the gods restrict man to be in complete control, which places themselves equal to or above the gods. Adam and Eve ignored the rule of the gods, defying their power, and decide to claim that power as their own. The Takers believe that was the start of the ascent above the gods. Ishmael helps the Narrator understand that the Taker culture interpreted the story of Adam and Eve as an ascent unlike the Leavers and the gods that see this as a fall from grace. To accomplish this lesson, Ishmael uses the allusion of the biblical version of the “fall” of Adam and Eve for the Narrator to fully grasp the story in a different light than the allusion the Takers live in. Takers had eaten off the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which was forbidden from them because no human should have more power than the gods. The Takers believed they needed knowledge of the gods because they felt they were above them. When in reality, the Leavers knew such knowledge couldn’t belong to any life on Earth other than the gods. Ishmael declared “It 's something like this; man was innocent until he discovered the difference between good and evil. When he was no longer innocent of that knowledge he became a fallen creature” (183), which describes the Leavers view of Takers’ culture. In his essay, "The Magnitude, Duration, and Distribution of Evil: a Theodicy," Peter van Inwagen alleges a set of reasons that God may have for allowing evil to exist on earth. Inwagen proposes the following story – throughout which there is an implicit assumption that God is all-good (perfectly benevolent, omnipotent, and omniscient) and deserving of all our love. God created humans in his own likeness and fit for His love. In order to enable humans to return this love, He had to give them the ability to freely choose. That is, Inwagen holds that the ability to love implies free will. By giving humans free will, God was taking a risk. As Inwagen argues, not even an omnipotent being can ensure that "a creature who has a free choice between x and y choose x rather than y" (197)1. (X in Inwagen’s story is ‘to turn its love to God’ and y is ‘to turn its love away from God,’ towards itself or other things.) So it happened that humans did in fact rebel and turn away from God. The first instance of this turning away is referred to as "the Fall." The ruin of the Fall was inherited by all humans to follow and is the source of evil in the world. But God did not leave humans without hope. He has a plan "whose working will one day eventuate in the Atonement (at-one-ment) of His human creatures with Himself," or at least some of His human creatures (198). This plan somehow involves humans realizing the wretchedness of a world without God and turning to God for help.
Other species. Different people. Different others. Something that I almost missed while reading this book was the theme of diversity. Diversity in looks, thoughts, and mainly opinions. The Taker and Leaver culture was presented to guide humans to the right way, yet it did much more than that. The two different cultures were brought out because they were basically different. If I were to press the button and go back to pre revolutionary times, would I ever have met man when he wasn’t in control? The Taker culture wouldn’t have existed and I wouldn’t have a button to press. These different perspectives of how to live are defined by the laws of nature. For example, in chapter 10, when the narrator was explaining the myths of his people, he got onto the topic of Hammurabi’s laws. “And Hammurabi says, ‘Laws are things that tell you the one right way to live” (Quinn
Symbolism is very prominent over the course of this story, giving it that much more meaning. Knowles makes not only one, but several instances to religious principles and more precisely in this case, Adam and Eve. These of jealousy, greed, and selfishness are prominent throughout both stories as well is a significant fall whether it would be as monstrous as humanity or on the smaller scale of relationships. The disruption of peace and harmony are also evident in the two. In addition, it is interesting how the author finds a way to tie them all into each other.
Quinn gains a unique perspective on humanity through the main character of the novel, Ishmael. Ishmael is a gorilla. And Ishmael is a teacher who communicates with humans telepathically. On the surface, this hardly seems to be a character who would appear in a serious book; more likely a children's story, a fable, or perhaps a bad science fiction novel. Yet Ishmael is none of these, and Ishmael is a strong character, with a powerful intellect and a serious purpose. The character of Ishmael needs to be non-human in order to be effective. Looking in on civilization from the outside gives him a perspective from which to criticize humanity without hypocrisy. To hear the oppressor repent is not nearly so effective as to hear the voice of the oppressed demand freedom and restitution.
Daniel Quinn has written a book about how things have come to be the way they are. He looks at the meaning of the world and the fate of humans. Ishmael the main character is a teacher of vast wisdom, as well as being a Gorilla. Being no ordinary Gorilla, Ishmael recognises the failing of human kind in relation to their moral responsibilities. He ultimately directs use towards a solution to the problems we have created for the planet. Ishmael is trying to convey that man kind is living in such a way that we can not last. Our vast numbers alone is hindering our survival.
In this book, there were no characters so I chose to write about the most interesting topic in chapter one called “excuses, excuses.” The author here explains about the very first fight between husband and wife and the excuses Adam and Eve gave to cover up their sin in the Garden of Eden. When God asked them of their crime, they tried to put the blame on each other. In all fairness neither of them lied but they did try to cover up the truth, literally. (Genesis 3) Both of their excuses were true but they were very lame. They both refused to take responsibility for their actions and lied straight to God’s face.
Steinbeck uses the biblical story of Cain and Abel in East of Eden to show us that we do not have set fate. Steinbeck uses the Hebrew word “timshel”, which means “thou mayest”, to suggest that man has the ability to choose good or evil. “Timshel” affects the characters in East of Eden such as Cal and Aron and their choice of overcoming good or evil. Steinbeck sees this novel as his most important work, and he uses it as a way to state his personal ideas concerning mankind:“The free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual.”(Steinbeck,132). Steinbeck shows God has given humans free will and their ability to choose good or evil, if they so decide. He portrays the “C” characters to be connected to Cain, such as Charles and Cal and the “A” characters to be connected to Abel, such as Aron and Adam.
Since the beginning of time, societies have created stories to explain the mystery of the origin of man and the universe. In the Babylonian text, Enuma Elish and the book of Genesis-which originated in the same part of the world-one finds two very different stories about the creation of man. These two creation stories contrast the two societies that created them: the chaotic lives of servitude of the Babylonians and the lives of the recently freed Jewish people.

Finally, the analogy to the fruit of knowledge and the downfall of man is played out by Sethe as she gathers her children (her fruit) to her. The text continues the analogy as Sethe does something unthinkable, something evil, and she is cast out of the garden for it. These passages serve to reaffirm the never ending battle between good and evil.
Steinbeck portrays the significance of timshel through the introduction of free will, which plays an important role in the theme of Cain and Abel and provides the interpretation of Steinbeck. Timshel is brought in by Lee who is the servant of the Trask family and discussed by both Samuel Hamilton, and Adam Trask. In chapter 24 Lee discusses the idea of timshel by showing the different interpretations of it through various translations, in the Hebrew translation it says “thou mayest rule over sin” which gives man a choice to fight through their sin and overcome it (302). Thus, “the translation of timshel into “thou mayest” enables the release of the energy in every human being “(Schultz). Timshel helps us not only understand the choices of human beings, but it shows that “Steinbeck constructs his fiction around the theory that timshel should be translated to thou mayest…he tells us about his own philosophy from the use of the Bible” (Warren). Steinbeck uses timshel as a way to let out his own philosophy about humans from using the Bible. This introduction of timshel through Lee becomes a very important part of the story as well as a theme; by this Steinbeck conveys his ideas and thoughts on a man’s destiny. Timshel then becomes a big part of the story which alters the plot of the Cain and Abel story by offering free will. The myths which prove the contradictory behavior of the gods, acting as both benefactors and tormentors of man, can readily be explained when viewed in light of the prime directive for man, to worship the gods and not “overstep,” and the ensuing “Deus ex Mahina” which served to coerce man to fulfill his destiny as evidenced by the myths: “Pandora,” “Arachne, and “Odysseus.” Humankind and it’s range of vision over the gods beauty and power portrayed them to be benefactors but unseemingly it depicted their affliction towards humans.
