When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. What causes people to work unsafe is one of the main challenges that face all Safety Managers across the world.
Rehrig Pacific Company has been in business since 1913. Over 100 years in business, family owned and operated since then. Now on its 5 generation of owners. He is a vital part of Rehrig Pacifics success. He became National Safety Manager after the current owner Will Rehrig took over for his father Brad Rehrig. Will saw a need to improve the safety of all his plants, one of the main problems he was facing is how they would accomplish this task. Adult learners want to know that what they are learning they can actually use and not just that they have to sit in class because their boss told them too. The instructor also has to include activities and assignments that encourage adult learners to explore. The instructor has to create the lesson in a way that the adult learner can explore the lesson so that the adult learner can pull from their own experiences. It is very important to consider the experience and educational background of the adult learners. At times they may have more knowledge to present than the actual instructor. It’s a great idea to get these individuals included in the conversation. Adults need to know that they are doing things correct or incorrect so that they can fix their mistakes. When creating the lesson it’s important to integrate emotionally-driven content. While using the emotionally-driven content emphasize the real-world benefits. Show the learners how this knowledge can be used daily. Creating the lesson is tricky and it is very important not to cognitive overload when creating content.
