I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
Authentic Leadership
I have not had the pleasure of working with a true authentic leader yet, but my current manager is one of the closest. My current manager inspires me to be in control of my own destiny, make my own decisions and providing feedback to better myself in the future. He can be firm when he wants to, but as we have worked together for a number of years and I respect him, so we can have candid discussions.
He is proficient in everything he does and often when we work together on information for the executives, he will almost always refine and change the information I provide, to be relative for them. He has good communication and verbal skil...
I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Different experiences and situations help mold leaders into who they become. I hope to use the different styles we have learned about to mold me into an effective leader in today’s society.
Aside from cultural leadership, my style relates to the attributes of a transformative leader. Through analyses of the Bell Curve, Leadership Behavior, and Motivation assessments, I had a strong need to see others succeed. I see college as a transformative experience and the front desk position is able to give students the qualities to be successful after college. I inspire my employees to share my vision and help them understand the reasons behind my values. I show personal integrity, self-confidence, and optimism for the future. Though these qualities I transform the organization with a more effective team.
According to Dr. Karlene Kerfoot, “research tells us that the leadership traits of the person in charge work either as a magnet to attract, retain, and inspire or as a force that repels” (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25) and in support of this statement she makes reference to the fact that many persons go to work for a specific company with enthusiasm and eagerness and ultimately leave disappointed because of the management. “People are generally hungry for personalized leadership that speaks to their hearts”, says Dr.Kerfoot and this type of leadership motivates them to accomplish task and complete projects they deem difficult or impossible (Kerfoot 2006, p. 25)
...ram, I have also learned that it takes a combination of leadership styles and taking scenarios case by case to perform as an effective leader. My preferences would be a combination of transformational and transactional leadership. Since I work in processing, the transactional part of my leadership will have to be there, but I would strive to add leading with integrity, a shared vision, and being humble among staff members. I hold myself accountable just as I would with other team members. I understand that this approach will not always work, because situations will change and call for different types of leadership, but for the most part a combination of transactional and transformational leadership would be the most effective in the majority of situations at work.

The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
An authentic leader must be prepared to listen and be aware of each students’ ‘story’ before responding so that appropriate and effective actions can be undertaken to educate and restore the leader-follower relationship and to set an example for the student of what justice truly looks like in action and to hold an ethical standard of relationship building.

I like the fact that the teacher pointed out that leadership can be found everywhere. Leaders don't necessarily exist only in a company where there are a lot of people following you. “Everyone has the potential and possibility to be a leader”. They could be the best at inspiring others, or best at solving problems or dealing with criticism. By and large we all have the necessities to lead and I find, during the group discussions, that the difference and uniqueness of us that give us our own perspective to view and do things. Leadership is also about understanding and combining many different talents and to make them work together to create the best result. There are many kinds of leaders out there, and so many leadership styles. Yet I think we shouldn’t categorised ourselves into one or identify our superiors into one. Why? Because I think it is crucial to be flexible and adapt to which way to lead according to the situations For example, the Democratic style maybe the most popular and most effective, yet it is proved to be counter-productive in urgent occasions requiring instant and firm decisions from one person only, and that is the

He or she can make a person trust them whole heartedly. They make people believe in their cause. There are only a few exceptional people that can affect the world on such a massive level that it leaves you in awe, and Nelson Mandela is one of those few exceptional people. He is one of those people that you know in your heart that he is something special. Mandela is a man of unwavering determination, exuding confidence, with the ability to inspire a nation; making him the pinnacle of leadership.
In Bill George’s book, Discover Your True North, he describes the “Journey to Authentic Leadership” as three phases; Phase I, Preparing for leadership, Phase II, Leading, and Phase III, Generativity (George, 2015). After forty plus years of leadership positions, twenty-five years in the Marine Corps, eight years as a Manager at a nuclear generating station, and ten years as a Law Enforcement Program Manager, I have now reached George’s Phase III where I am ready to pass on my experiences and knowledge to a younger generation. In about a year, I will close out my career in law enforcement and would like to start my next chapter in life teaching or consulting. Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
There is a time and place to insert these styles and depending on the people being lead will help key into what style needs to be brought to light. Being a leader seems to be both engrained in us genetically and life lessons mold into our leadership style as we progress through life. The balance of rewards and punishments were carefully applied, but he ensured to continue maximizing great experiences since human nature tends to want to be surrounded by it. My stepfather gave us his selfless service and seeks no recognition for what he did; he was worthy of it.
When I think of someone who is a great leader I automatically think about current and previous managers I have had over the years, and honestly I cannot say that any of them are the definition of a great leader. So after I looked up many different definitions of a leader all of them basically defined a leader in the same way, someone who leads people. So, a leader does not typically have to be a manager it could be a teacher or a parent. That is when I realize that a great leader has always been right in front of me teaching me great values, and that is my mother.
The old system of management has undergone many changes within the last century. An employee once performed the assigned job duties during the allotted hours and then went home. Now employees are encouraged to grow, give input, and to contribute for the good of the organization. There is a plethora of information for leaders to learn why and how to grow personally thus allowing the organization to grow as well. This new emerging leader is a transformational leader.
