As we reflect on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination, I am driven to think less of this theft of life, and more of the 50 years since. Right before King passed, he said his dream had become a nightmare and that one of his fears was that America was not yet ripe to receive change. In the fifty years following his death, I worry that even for the many sprinkles of hope, the massive triumphs and the great achievements of history, that we have too often proven his greatest fears correct. As soon as the seeds of change began to blow too hard, some form of oppression begins to push back. It is almost expected in this country to some degree.
