Reflection On Service Learning Project

When thinking about doing my service learning project I had to think about so many things. The very first thing that I had to think about was doing a group or individual project. When doing a group project you don’t want to be the only person that actually does the work. You know that if you do a project alone you will be doing all the work and you will have no time to procrastinate at all. I chose to do a group project with my roommate at the time and a girl that was in my suite at the time. Even though I didn’t know these girls work ethic or how they did things I picked them because I thought that I could put my trust in them to be able to work on this project together. The rules we put in place for our group was for our project but also to help if it got out of hand and made us angry with each other. Our first rule was to meet on Tuesdays to do the project together so it would be done evenly and so we could agree on the service project we were going to do. We did this so we were all in one place and one person couldn’t just give up and make everyone else do all the work and have all the ideas because then it wouldn’t be a group project. Another rule we had was if someone was to get angry or argue over someone’s ideas to take a ten minute break and come back to it with a clear mind. We didn’t want the project to reach a point that could jeopardize our friendship because of our bull headedness or that someone has more of a leadership mentality then the rest of us. Our last rule was to listen to what everyone in the group was saying no matter what they say. No idea is a bad idea and if someone can’t let their ideas out no one would really know how they feel or what they think about something. The criteria we used to choose the project was to think about what kind of service learning we wanted to do. Choosing between direct service learning, indirect service learning, research based service learning, and advocacy service learning was the first major decision in the group. We decided that doing direct service learning would be the best. Everyone in the group had done this type of service learning before either for a club or just to graduate. I helped cater a Christmas party for the local senior center. I also did an after school babysitting program and a few other things that are examples of direct service
