Reflection On Reflective Practice

The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
I will be using the What? Model of Structured reflection suggested by Driscoll (2000), a recognised framework for reflection to demonstrate my ability to reflect on a clinical skill with the professional value of privacy and dignity.
According to Driscoll (2000), there are three processes when reflecting on one’s practice. They are: ‘What?’, ‘so what?’ and ‘Now what?’ Using Driscoll’s reflective cycle will enable me to link theory to practice.

I then sat him up in bed and made sure he was comfortable. Mr. Brown smiles and commented on what a good job I had done, which made me feel confident and appreciated.

After completing this skill I feel the most important thing for me was maintaining Mr. Browns privacy and dignity and communication. As I communicated more with Mr. Brown I felt we were starting to build a rapport and I felt more at ease with completing my task.

My aim is to provide more male personal care to increase my confidence. Having my mentor to guide me really helped, I listened effectively to the information given, and I intend to put it into practice in the future. Team work was also a very important aspect which ensured we delivered safe & high quality care (Leonard, M. et al.2004).
My knowledge about the concept of privacy and dignity and its importance to health care and the benefit to service users has increased, however I will also be conducting more research on privacy and dignity in relation to patient care.

It would be of advantage to reflect again on this clinical skill in the future, to see how different I am from now and what I have learnt from my experiences (Boyd EM,
