Learning about other cultures really helps me understand other races and its help me put myself in their shoes. The Latin American Culture has a lot of differences from my own culture and my life. While learning about African Americans in the US I realized how horrible it is to discriminate against race and how much racism is still around. Learning about Caucasian Americans, not everyone has lived a perfect life and you can push your self to change. Then finally, substance abuse is something every one needs to learn and practice safe drug/alcohol use. Its important for Family and Human Service majors to learn and experience different cultures to help as many different people. Understanding peoples culture helps you help them. …show more content…

America has come such a long way from the 19th century, but the way we raise our children and how we discriminate against color is still not an easy life for other races. As a little girl I completely remember going to the grocery store with my mom and seeing a black man. I remember I kept staring and I felt scared. I was brought up to ignore and keep my mouth shut. Living in Chicago I got used to and learned how to live with people from a different race, but when I moved to Oregon I saw how they treated and reacted to seeing a black person differently. Johnny Lake had a wonderful lecture that made me really feel how he felt living in the U.S a black man. It is different life style and I was able to see it through his lecture. He really showed the class how African Americans are getting treated. I know a lot of people who don’t like talking about the racial issues and say there isn’t a problem. But their clearly is, and I didn’t think about until this lecture, but the black community needs everyone’s help to make this issue go away. Even at the university, I don’t see many black students and its assumed that they are just here for sports. Another assumption that African Americans have is drugs. I think this stereotype is outrageous. Oregon has a lot of drugs and yet all the drug use is blamed of African Americans. There needs to be more respect for African Americans, when Johnny told …show more content…

It made me think twice about drinking just because its fun. I knew drinking was bad and it causes liver damage but in the case of alcohol poisoning, I never learned much about it and how dangerous it can be. Everyone should learn about alcohol abuse and alcohol poisoning, especially college students. Teaching students the symptoms and what to do in case in happens can save lives. I have never been in a situation where someone drinks that much, but I can only image it being scary. Underage students at a party might not want to get in trouble for drinking, so having the person sleep it off could be their only option in their mind. But educating students and informing them might have them think twice about what they do in that situation. The idea of having a wing person or a buddy to help someone with drug use is such a wonderful idea. Having someone to help and stop you from making the situation worse, can really save you. I didn’t think about how differently drugs can effect people. I can see how depression or anger can effect someone on drugs, but I didn’t expect that the setting that you are in or your expectations of the drug can effect its results. The perspective of drugs is that it makes money, it is crazy that pharmacies are the biggest drug dealer. Things in the US needs to change if pharmacies can give you drugs that can harm you and getting away with
