Reflection: My Experience As A Service Learner

In order for future service learners to have a successful and beautiful experience the best way to approach a community is to begin exploring certain places and analyzing important issues that the community is facing. Exploring the community and talking to residents of the community is a great start because a service learner begins to learn about important obstacles that a community is facing and begins to have an idea about where the members of the community come from. At the service site, there will be many obstacles along the way which is going to make service learners unmotivated about their experience. At my service site, the positive and negative feedback were appreciated. If the program continues to focus on the education of the children by continue offering a homework tutoring program and a new college advising for high school students then this will support the site’s social justice by making a positive change. Since I was the only service learner who spoke both English and Spanish I made a positive change by welcoming the parents and always answering their questions and concerns. I was the only students that made sure to call the parents of the students to remind them of their session. At my service site, my bilingual skills were truly valued. I also made an impact in the student’s education. As mentioned in the recording it made me super happy when one of the students who I work with mentioned to his mom that he needed flashcards in order to continue practicing his multiplication tables. Another impact that I made on my site was when one of the parents of another student who I worked with mentioned that she was really thankful for my dedication and help on her daughter’s education. She was really happy to see that ever since her daughter began to attend this program her skills began to improve and she was more motivated in school.
