Reflection About Italian Culture

Through the many course readings, I have learned a lot about Italian culture. Many times, while learning about the Italian culture, I found myself finding similarities and differences between my own cultural background. It was very interesting to read about the many customs that are a part of the Italian culture, and how they reflect the identity of the country and its people. Detecting these connections that exist in the Italian culture made me realize the connections that exist between my cultural background and my own identity.

First and foremost, I grew up with a collision of many cultures. I was born in the Dominican Republic, so I was exposed to their culture up to the age of six. Then I moved to New York City and I felt that I was exposed to the Hispanic culture that existed specifically in New York City. Furthermore, I was also exposed to the more general American culture, and then more specifically New York City culture. Given my diverse cultural background, I feel that many aspects of the Italian culture were not extremely surprising. However, I do feel that because the American culture has been more dominant in my upbringing, I knew of most of the customs because I have seen other members in my family partake in them. For example, I know that for my family members that live in the Dominican Republic noon is a time for rest, and that they also enjoy many carnivals and festivals year-round. Other aspects of Italian culture I could relate to the American culture, these aspects in particular were the changes that occurred to Italy in the last couple of decades. In my personal experiences I believe that residents of New York City are also waiting until they are older to get married and have children, and they are also having fewer children.
