With increasing technology, we embraced the introduction to the world wide web, providing new ways of communicating. We heard about global warming and the threat to our climate. Literary Responses to culture shock gave us “mainstream” or “highbrow” stories that focused on the chaotic events of our time, with characters that intertwined with it. Also came the style of “commercial” or “lowbrow” fiction, which focused more on events and the plots instead of the characters
After the end of WW2, two major governmental institutions, the USA and the USSR, with conflicting political ideologies and agendas, set forth to dominate each other in international politics. This period of time, also known as the Cold War, initiated an era of crazed hysteria in the United States as these two governments frequently clashed and bitterly fought. As a result, the frightened public grew delirious as the world grew dangerously close to a calamitous nuclear war, which ultimately prompted the Eisenhower administration to hinder the spread of communism and encourage the U.S. population to rapidly pursue higher education for the future welfare of this nation.
The defeat of Germany and its satellites in the war radically changed the balance of forces in the world. The Soviet Union became one of the leading world powers, without which, should not have been resolved then no question of international life. And so, its features began to have impact on world relations and became clearer for foreign diplomats and observers.
Before Bush’s presidency, the United States and the Soviet Union began to ease the tension between the two countries. The efforts of relations began with a caution called pauza (Virginia, U. O. ,2017). This pause between the United States and the Soviet Union, help to improve the relation between the two. Also in 1989, the Berlin wall was torn down. During a press conference many reports asked why he was not enthusiastic about this happening, and President Bush replied by saying “ I am not an emotional person” (Virginia, U. O. ,2017). By him not showing his emotions, it saved him a lot of hurt from Eastern Europe. Although it upset many Americans, it saved President Bush from any more tension. In July of 1991, America and Germany signed an agreement called Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, also known as START (Virgina, U. O. ,2017). This helped to reduce the use of nuclear weapons, which helped to end The Cold War. President Bush used all of these policy, and this policy to stop the feud between all of the countries and ease the tension. So not only did he end the feud, but also so the United States could trade with other countries. The end of The Cold War is a big accomplishment for the United States, it went on for many many years. Buts with President Bush's’ help America stopped the war and started relations with other
...e enhancement of a reader’s comprehension to the context of a story. Knowing the context of the story, an audience can understand some of the historical references that an author may make. The Western genre is overall important to American Literature because “The West defines how Americans view their past, and this region, more than any other, is the source of the American identity, pride, and cherished heroes” (Blake). The context also shows the relationship between the Western genres to the rest of American Literature. The iconic settings, themes, and language used by the authors, make the Western genre one of the most significant elements of American Literature.
Although the end of World War II brought immense joy to the world, it was a turning point for American literature. Though the war was over, it was like starting over for America as it donned a new post war era. Authors and poets used their stories and characters to portray the grim era of that time and many of them reflected a guilt and disillusionment in the American dream. Though various writers had their own ideas of what the new post war America would shape out to be, not all had positive outlooks. It was a time of change as the United States was beginning its foray to the forefront of being the new cultural center and world power. Not only did a new generation come out of the war, but its ethnic, regional, and social character was
The early 1900s in the United States saw a continued polarization of class and race. While The Industrial Revolution had created opportunity for many, and extreme wealth for a privileged few, this prosperity was heavily distributed among White America; the majority of Black Americans were still mired in poverty in the southern states. The abolition of slavery did not bring the equal rights and boundless opportunity for Black Americans that they had hoped for; instead it brought disillusionment and struggle. Similarly, the end of World War II saw a parallel of disillusionment begin to emerge among the youth of White America. These parallels grew into two very distinctly different American Literary genres. The one“Finding that their elders
The first major event in the Detente was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan or the Soviet-Afghan war. It was from 1979-1989. The reason the Soviets invaded Afghanistan was that they wanted to help the communist regime in Kabul. The U.S. supported the opposing forces known as the mujahadeen. The C.I.A supplied them with munitions and supplies to fight the Soviets. This is now considered a bad idea because the mujahadeen later turned into the Taliban which turned into the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. The war ended when the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan. The next major event was the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. This left the East Germans free to visit West Berlin. This united many broken families. Soon after the Berlin Wall fell the communist governments in Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Bulgaria fell. This was because the Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev put into place Glasnost and Perestroika which allowed the Soviet people more freedom to do things such as read Western newspapers and magazines. This made them realize the capitalism was much better than communism. This made many revolts happen which threw out many of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe. Soon the Soviet Union was dissolved on December 26, 1991. This ended the Cold War because the Soviet Union was no longer a country. This left the world with one main superpower, the U.S. Some historians reckon that this put history to
The quintessence of American culture is freedom. We have the freedom to control our words, to dress however we desire, pursue any variety of education, work in any career field, and to ultimately be whoever we want to be- all of this is how individuals use their freedom to shape their identity. This idea of controlling one’s identity has been clearly seen throughout American history, through both media and historical figures. We see how characters like Holly Golightly from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” completely reinvented herself into what she desired to be, and more modernly, how President Donald Trump went from a business man to a roaring politician in a short period of time. These examples of the transition of one’s identity reflects just how much power we have in our personal agency. The song “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise” by the Avett
As World War II came to a close in 1945, not all the disagreements between nations were over. Some of the allied countries turned on each other as the future of broken European areas became clear after the war. Two superpowers, the United States and Soviet Union, began to engage in the Cold War after the close of the war. The building of the Berlin Wall is an important turning point in history because of the large physical and psychological symbol the wall played in representing the impacts of the two Cold War ideologies on each other and foreign peoples and the lasting social impact of the latest world war.
My family, in my eyes, is perfectly normal. I was blessed to have been born into a family with strong Latina and American influence. My mother came from a completely different atmosphere and strongly held onto her culture. Being from Chile in South America, my mother tried to maintain a strong Latin influence in my brother and my lives despite the fact that my dad knew nothing about her culture. From speaking the language, to celebrating holidays and traditions, and eating the food, my mother made sure we knew our heritage as well as hers in order to pass this heritage down from generations to generations.
Bush and Ronald Regan assuring the end of the Soviet Union. Once a new leader was elected in Russia, Both countries were finally able to resolve the nuclear tension and Russia’s new leader realized the detrimental effects the war was having on the infrastructure and economy of Russia. Russia’s leader knew things could not be sustained and both the US and Soviet Union decided to end the Cold War. Shortly after, in 1991 the Soviet Union fell. The Cold War and its policies had detrimental fallout effects on the American people resulting from the carelessness, and ignorance of the US government. From the 1950s-1970s, the US saw a remodeling of culture resulting from government policies and necessary changes to American life. The Cold War changed the future of America
“A Tale Intended to be After the Fact…” is how Stephan Crane introduced his harrowing story, “The Open Boat,” but this statement also shows that history influences American Literature. Throughout history, there has been a connection among literary works from different periods. The connection is that History, current events, and social events have influenced American Literature. Authors, their literary works, and the specific writing styles; are affected and influenced by the world around them. Authors have long used experiences they have lived through and/or taken out of history to help shape and express in their works. Writing styles are also affected by the current trends and opinions of the period they represent. By reading American Literature, we have seen the inhumane treatment of slaves, we have seen the destruction caused by wars, and we have seen the devastation of eras such as The Great Depression.
America became the sole superpower of the world. Communism is no more. Communism collapsed worldwide. The Cold War sketched the foreign policies for both the countries through the second half of the twentieth century as both countries fought for accomplices to uphold and widen their own realms of power around the world, but it did not escalate to an apocalyptic World War II. The decade- long standoff between American capitalists and Soviet communists ceased without causing any violence.
...ources we have today are almost endless. The progression of media has made access to information easier and faster than ever. Information is powerful and with its spread due to mass media, it can impact the whole world.
A new Pentagon report mentioned that global warming is one of the urgent and growing threat to “national security”(Nakamura, 2015, para 1).
