In the fourth stanza of “Recalling War”, the war is over and the war has turn earth to ugly earth and death is seen everywhere. The line also suggest that the soldiers who were living in the earth now went to ugly earth. Here the term ugly earth means that so many people were dead. “War was return of earth to ugly earth, War was foundering of sublimities, Extinction of each happy art and faith”. The war was the main reason submilities, happy art and faith. The tone of the poem is really tragic because the hope turned into fear and then it make readers feel little bit happy in third stanza as the soldiers get motivated and then its finally again collapse. People today follow the rules because if you don’t follow the rules, you will get big punishment and that is what called Fear. Likewise, if people remember what circumstance should happen if they decide to war, they would not prefer it. The war creates many damages. Many people dies, almost whole country get ruined, weapons are wasted. Also making weapons cost tons of money and if the war happens the economy of the country will go down and it will be very difficult for the country to rise up then after. Graves poem “Recalling War” is little bit hard to understand as the tone get frequently change when you go to one stanza from another. The climax of the poem is in the fourth stanza where the people can understand better that we don’t need war between the counties. People want to live in a peaceful way at their homes. Most importantly this poem is more about the soldiers. The consequences the soldiers faces during the war is unthinkable. Soldiers have thousands of thing going into their minds when war happens.
