Human beings require their pleasures for a daily need be filled, whether it be a guilty one or not, the pleasure is there. In Jennifer Pozner’s Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV we step through where reality TV has taken our guilty pleasure on another level. TV is one of every Americans center of attention at some point during the day or week, which provide us with the visualization of what we watch to become a consumption of our life and views. Jennifer’s aim is intended to have readers look at our social trends with an analytical lens so that people don’t dismiss what they are seeing as meaningless, and her point being not to stop these activities, but to understand what we are seeing and watching on TV.

Pozner goes into depth about how much reality TV is affecting its views today, who in turn affect the rest of society also. Her 10 years of experience definitely give her a handle on what the readers will have probably seen over the years. She does well in point out things people don’t know about the shows they are watching, as she states “100% of the time less than 1% actually gets aired.”

She talks about something I have agreed on for a long time, which is the “story lines” aspect of how reality television can really get played out. People only have to have a dramatic moment and scene for the 1% of camera time that is going to get aired, which gives us a false sense of reality, when these shows are created over extended periods of time. Also her mentioning the ability to merge words together to make contestants sound like they are saying something specific, which gives us a false sense of reality contest shows as well.

In conclusion, Reality Bites Back was a well written read that Pozner managed very well in exploring the things that you can read into when looking at where our cultural behavior is evolving from. It’s clear that it comes from what we see and experience to which way people will shift socially, and TV and the media have their hands within our whole life experiences. This is something we need to be conscious of when we watch things that will have an impact on us and the youth that we must shape amongst are values. It gives value to the idea that we can make change by education and realization of what it is we are seeing, and getting things across to others. It has to be a collection of these ideas and realizations among the most of us to make sure we can become more aware of good change and degrading change.
