Our continued dependence on technology will have a negative impact in the future of humanity if it continuous. In the short story The Veldt the author Ray Bradbury is implying that the heavy reliance of humans on technology would lead their demise. In The Veldt the parents who are heavily dependent on technology so dependent in fact that they let a machine take care of their children and , sure technology is considerably more efficient than the parents will ever hope of becoming, however the machine is doing more harm than good in this case because no machine could ever hope to provide the children with the love and care that the parents can provide their children. The advancement of computer technology and videogames, I personally play videogames a lot because they are fun but some people take it to the extreme and go on long periods of time without talking to anyone and just shutting themselves in. He also brings out the admirable side of people when they use technology. However, along with the improvement of technology, the government establishes a censorship through strict rules and order. With the use of the fire truck that uses kerosene instead of water, the mechanical hound, seashell radio, the three-walled TV parlor, robot tellers, electric bees, and the Eye, Bradbury portrays how technology can benefit or destroy humans.
The main characters in “The Veldt” who so prominently exhibited reckless decision-making were the parents. Their most significant decision concerning the wellness of their children was their choice to purchase a number of machines that would complete everyday tasks for their children such as tying their shoes, bathing them, and feeding them, leading them to become dependent on the machines rather than their parents. Therefore, their initial reaction to being told that the machines were being taken away was to be angry. Their son screams, “‘Don’t let them switch off the nursery and the house,’ he was saying. Mr. and Mrs. George Hadley beat at the door… Mr. and Mrs. Hadley screamed.” The children’s immediate reaction showed that the technology had a significant influence on them. The main responsibility of all parents is to think carefully about every decision regarding their children, which they failed to do when making this decision. Bradbury wanted to show that technology wasn’t always good, and in some cases could even be bad. Fahrenheit 451is set in a dystopian future that is viewed as a utopian one, void of knowledge and full of false fulfillment, where people have replaced experiences with entertainment. The children were horribly spoiled and considered the nursery as their parents, not their actual parents. The nursery is a room that turns your thoughts into reality. The nursery had been an African veldt for about a month now, demonstrating ideas of death and hatred ever since the children were denied a rocket to New York. They called in a psychologist named David McClean. He said this wasn’t good at all and that they needed to shut the house down as soon as possible, as well as getting away from here. George and Lydia were fine with it since they wanted to do so already, they wanted to live and the house wasn’t letting them. They told the children and they were in hysterics. They begged the nursery to be turned back on. They did so, and eventually George and Lydia were locked inside by their children, and were killed by the lions that were always in the veldt, waiting. Montag resides in a very advanced technological world whereas in our society, we live in a technological world that is not as advanced. When Montag asks Mildred what’s playing on the TV, she describes a show that’s about to play where the person watching the TV also becomes a character. She is given a script and throughout the show, the characters will involve her in conversations and she has to read what’s on her script, “‘It’s really fun. It’ll be even more fun when we can afford to have the fourth wall installed. How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and a fourth wall-TV put in? It’s only two thousand dollars.’ ‘That’s one-third of my yearly pay,’ ‘It’s only two thousand dollars,’ she replied,” (18). In this conversation, Mildred wants to get a fourth wall TV put in but Montag says no because it costs too much.
