Rationale for poetry
The areas of English taught at Key Stage 1[KS1] and Key Stage 2 [KS2]
are set out in the National Curriculum [NC] document. Poetry is one of
these areas. At KS1 children should read and listen to nursery rhymes
and poetry, learning some by heart, and read aloud. At KS2 children
should read aloud, telling and enacting stories and poems. The
National Literacy Strategy [NLS] guides teachers on which poems and
poetic forms to teach in the classroom. There are two recent views
that the NC and the NLS are failing in their approach to poetry.
· According to Carter, the NC for English is very limited in its
approach to poetry [Carter, 1998]. He argues that the NC fails to take
on board the potential poetry has to offer in many areas of a child's
development such as language, sensibility and dream power.
· Bielby [1999], as cited by Lambirth, argues that children come to
school already enjoying rhyme and poetry yet this enjoyment is being
corrupted by the analytical and technical approach of the NLS. Poetry
should be about exposing children to poetry and allowing them to
respond as children.[Lambirth, 2001]
These are both valid points, but is it the fault of the NC and the NLS
that poetry is seen as a challenge and daunting area both to teach and
learn. I briefly intend to illustrate why it is important to teach
poetry as part of the NC.
Promotes awareness of language
Children's ability to respond to words and sounds is almost innate.
According to the Oral Language Development Continuum [1997] babies
under one year old, when they babble, include all sounds and

There were two main cases that play a very important role for each side. The first case supported Maurice Clarett side was the Mackey v. National Football League case which involved a challenge brought by NFL players to the League's so-called "Rozelle Rule." The court decided to rely on the Mackey case in order to hold that the nonstatutory exemption provides no protection over the NFL's eligibility rules. They believe that the eligibility rules fail to satisfy the main factors that were determined by the Mackey case. They also concluded that the rules exclude strangers to the CBAs and did not concern wages, hours or working conditions of current NFL
Roper v. Simmons is a perfect example of the evolving role of the Supreme Court, the sources the Supreme Court used to reach the ruling in this case is quite questionable. While I agree with the Supreme Court about protecting the younger citizens of America the Supreme Court must have the law to back up their ruling. Though in this case they do not the Supreme Court used a combination of foreign policy, moral decency, and state laws as the legal foundation for this decision. None of these things are appropriate sources for deciding what is constitutional and what is not. The sources used for deciding the constitutionality of a case are the constitution and federal statues. While the case can be loosely tied in with the eighth amendment clause of “cruel and unusual punishment” there is no backing for the decision made. The Supreme Court with this case decided that it did not overturn the previous case of Stanford v. Kentucky, which ruled on this same issue fifteen years earlier. Yet the court stated that the prevailing moral code had altered therefore they changed their opinion. The truly shocking issue with this is that the neither law nor constitution had changed regarding this issue in the interceding fifteen years. The grave problem with this case is that the Supreme Court used the case of Roper V. Simmons to create law based of invalid sources.

“One merit of poetry few persons will deny: it says more and in fewer words than prose.” Said by Voltaire can describe the two poems, Seventeen by Andrew Hudgins and Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford. Both poems are written in a prose fashion but mean so much more than the written words. At a glance, the poems both seem to be about the tragic deaths of animals; however, the poems differ in their themes of growing up in Seventeen and the intermixing of technology with man and nature in Traveling through the Dark.

As Edgar Allan Poe once stated, “I would define, in brief the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of beauty.” The two poems, “Birthday,” and “The Secret Life of Books” use different diction, theme, and perspective to give them a unique identity. Explore how two of the poems you have studied deal with the theme of looking back on a relationship The two poems I have chosen to explain are Piano by D H Lawrence and In Mrs Tilchers Class by Carol Ann Duffy I have chosen these two. poems because they both tell us about the same sort of memory, i.e. of a good time in their childhood. Both poems are very emotional and Although they are both happy memories, the emotions vary, for example. in Piano the poem is very sad and nostalgic 'till the heart of me.
The three sources I have selected are all based on females. They are all of change and transformation. Two of my selections, "The Friday Everything Changed" by Anne Hart, and "Women and World War II " By Dr. Sharon, are about women’s rites of passage. The third choice, "The sun is Burning Gases (Loss of a Good Friend)" by Cathleen McFarland is about a girl growing up.
Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
Whenever people read poetry it takes into another planet, wonder how? Most authors of poetry have managed to take people into places they never seen before. Their use of imagery can describe both a majestic place or a nightmare on earth, and anything in between. For example, the use of metaphors can connect objects, or places to another, and as a result a metaphor can uncover new and fascinating advantages of the original thing. Another example is alliteration that provides importance, and sometimes supports in memory because it is catchy and perhaps humorous. In the magical world of poetry, all the rules of formal writing go out the window and create a piece of art, something that is entirely unique. Poetry is also very unique because it rarely uses characters; instead it uses literary devices that describe everything in depth. Overall, poetry uses many ways and methods to intrigue its readers to what more and more poetry. With hundreds of spectacular poets we have today it is made possible.
Contemporary female poets are a very powerful group of female poets that with their poems shows major events and issues in society. Contemporary female poets usually all have an underlying theme of politics, women rights, life events, and sexuality. Contemporary means living or occurring at the same time and some contemporary female poets are, Adrienne Rich, Nikki Giovanni, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Adrienne Rich, Nikki Giovanni, and Gwendolyn Brooks were all writing in the late 1900s. The Women Rights movement and the Civil Rights movement were two events that occurred during the time of the late 1900s. These two movements was heavily incorporated in each Brooks’, Rich’s, and Giovanni’s life and influenced their writings. Each of these women put their personal feelings about political issues in their poems, which makes the theme of their work politics. The theme of these three women work is different aspects of politics, such as women empowerment and women rights, and racial pride. “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” by Adrienne Rich, “Nikki-Rosa” by Nikki Giovanni, and “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks are the three poems that each represent the theme of politics regarding women rights and empowerment, and racial pride.
Poetry seems to particularly prevalent in media: television, magazines, movies, and even music. Unfortunately, today’s generation only hears poetry from these sources. Many people know what poetry is, but do not use it very often. Individuals that have taken a poetry class know the freeing effect that it can bring about. What ever happened to academic professionals teaching the importance of poetry? I decided to research the significance of poetry and it’s the advantages of it being used today still.

In the past, if I was inclined to read poetry I would probably have stopped about line two, rolled my eyes and found something else to do with my time. My view of poetry has now changed the way I read other poet’s work. My exposure to several different chapbooks now allows me to recognize themes within poetry, understand the progression of thought through their verse, and garner a comprehension of the motivation behind the artist process of producing a piece of creative art. The idea of motivation in a chapbook became clearer for me when I re-read The State of the Ship by Le. Goldstein.
