Rape on College Campuses
American college campuses are held on a pedestal as places of higher learning, socialization, creative and innovative thinking, and career training. American college campuses are also the place where an average of 31,302 women will be a victim of rape or sexual assault every year. About 20% of rape cases will be reported to schools, and a small percent of schools will investigate and take action against the alleged rapist. In fact, many colleges and universities will allow students accused of rape to transfer before a proper hearing can take place. The larger interest when it comes to colleges and sexual assault is simply protecting the colleges reputation, rather than their students safety. College campuses are allowing rape and sexual assault to happen without proper repercussions, which is only encouraging the problem to grow. The tolerance for sexual assault teaches students that women are less deserving of protection, and that sexual aggression is okay. No matter how much colleges talk against sexual violence, nothing will be done about it until real repercussions for rape and sexual violence are put into place. In a Time article by Kareem Abul-Jabbar focusing on college rape culture Jabbar notes that “It is not enough to provide panic buttons around campus or train female students how to be alert to predators, we must attack the bros-before-hos mentality as not cool or high-five worthy”.
To understand how colleges can take action to fix the problem of rape on college campuses, one must first understand the cause and motivators of rape among those enrolled in university. A research study on ‘The Role of Institutional Factors on On-Campus Reported Rape Prevelence’ by Stotzer and MacCartney revealed that the high rates of sexual assaults are committed by a specific subgroup within the campus community.
