Every year, there are approximately 230,000 cases of sexual assault, or one case every two minutes. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, if trends continue, a projected one out of every four women will be sexually assaulted sometime in her life. To many people, these statistics may seem shocking, and even untrue. After examining more closely the culture in which we live, though, it proves to be not so difficult to understand. Rape culture can be defined as the culture in a society in which rape and sexual violence is normalized and excused in pop culture and through the media.
Looking at today’s culture, one cannot help but feel that this rings true on many levels. From movies to music, the subject of rape is often tossed around lightly. Oftentimes, the word “rape” is used synonymously with words like “own” or “destroy,” in sentences such as, “we totally raped that team,” to show victory over something or someone. Rape culture does not exclusively give one sex an advantage. What it does do is harm victims, and gives offenders leeway to continue to commit crimes with little chance of being confronted or punished.
To un-teach society something as pervasive as rape culture sounds like a complete impossibility. As much as some people may hate to admit it, it is a part of everyday life that makes up who they are and what they do. Once learned, it is almost incessantly engrained into a person and in society. Although it may be impossible to completely obliterate rape culture in the current generations, there are measures that can be taken to reduce its dissemination into our culture. One of them is simply speaking out against rape, and informing others of the harm it causes.
