Music In The 1990’s All influenced by Keith Cowboy/ Rapper Grand Master Flash and The Furious Five, in the 1970’s Hip Hop music began. This style of music became popular mostly around the late 80’s Early 90’s. Hip hop music in the 90’s was made up of 4 key things; Rapping, scratching, beatboxing & synthesis. There were many different styles of rap including Gangsta Rap, Political Rap, Alternative Rap and Crunk Music. Some people who showed examples of this type of rap were 2Pac Shakur, Dr.Dre and Notorious B.I.G and D4L. Does the line “Don't push me cause I'm close the edge, I’m trying not to lose my head” sound familiar? Grand Master Flash’s Song “The Message” focused on Political Rap. The beginnings of it were found in the late 80s and early 90s groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic Five introduced original lyrics and also had samples of other genres of music like rock, into their music. Groups seemed influenced, but mainly they had the feeling of soft kids that might be experimenting with alternatives to the boredoms. Although, if we go back far enough, to the old Old School, we see artists like Rammellzee, breaking through limitations. Most of these groups didn’t make mainstream, but Artists like Outkast and Kanye West blurred musical genres and took their style of alternative rap to a mainstream audience. This style of music was influenced by hardcore rap and was called Gangsta Rap this began in the late 80’s. Gangsta rap had an uneasy/noisy sound to it that wasn’t so appreciated in certain communities. Most, if not all, of this music just had to do with being straight and to the point about everything. Sometimes the lyrics used were an actual depiction on how their life really was, but it just sounded rude and offensive. Other times they told a story kind of like a comic book.
