Ralph Lauren didn't always wanna work in the fashion business. Up until high school, Lauren wanted to be an athlete, he loved basketball and stickball. During high school, Ralph started getting interested in fashion, and that is where his dream to have his own company began. He has been working towards his dream for multiple years and even when things got tough he always kept going and worked harder. Ralph has worked with many different companies and multiple people, to finally have his own company. Lauren started from making ties, and selling them in small companies. So, they bagan to sell his ties. “Lauren believed that what he did for ties could also be done for shirts, pants, and sweaters, For Lauren, ties were only a beginning” (Matern pg.40). Ralph also got offered by Norman Hilton, he is a suit manufacturer, his suits were high quality and Lauren has admired them for a long time. Ralph said no to his offer just like he did with Bloomingdale’s at first, because he doesn't want to work for anyone, he wants to run his own company. A few months later, Hilton and Lauren meet again. Hilton offered Lauren financial backing for him to start his own company, he lent him $50,000, but Hilton would get half ownership of Lauren’s new business. So Lauren took his offer. Lauren started off by making suits, but they turned out as a mess. “The suits were a disaster. The pants were too long and did not fit right in the waist. The sleeves of the jacket were to much short” (Mattern pg.44).
