Ralph changes his last name to Lauren at age sixteen because of being teased in school. As a teenage he had a taste in classic preppy wear and vintage look. Lauren attended college in Manhattan, where he studied business. He also attend the army for a brief time but afterward he worked at Brooks Brother which is a label known for its classic shirts, suits, sport wear and accessories for men, women, and children. Ralph worked for Beau Brumell whom was a fashion leader known for his elegant dress. While Ralph worked for Beau he designed his own necktie but with a wider cut and branding them “Polo” in 1967. Polo opened many boutiques across the United States and abroad. Ralph opened his flagship store, which is company's main store that is used in showcasing the various brands the store offers, in New York’s Rhinelander Mansion on Madison Avenue.
