Rain Man is one of the most famous Hollywood films that depicts the disorder of autism proper. It marked a new path for the disorder in the movie industry. The movie was released in 1988, when autism began to gain momentum. Not many knew what the disorder was, some have never heard of autism. Charlie Babbitt, who was played by Tom Cruise, found out that he has an estranged brother with autism. In the film, the two brothers embarked on a life changing road trip along the West Coast. Description Charlie met Raymond for the first time outside Walbrook Institute, where he has been patient for twenty years. Raymond was sitting in Charlie’s car, ranting about how he is only allowed to drive the car on Saturday’s. Ray continued to ramble about random facts about the Buick Roadster that shocked Charlie. He didn’t make eye contact with Charlie during this time. Raymond never made eye contact with anyone directly. They later moved to Ray’s room, and Charlie began to examine the area. Charlie started to touch Ray’s belongings, which caused Ray to get nervous. Since he does not like others touching his possessions, Raymond nervously began to cite the “Who’s on First?” skit. He used this skit as a coping mechanism when anyone is in his personal space, or when he is in a new environment. He was able to memorize part of the phonebook and a music playlist by photographic memory. In addition, he was able to compute any math problems without a calculator or paper. He was able to count cards at the casino and count the toothpicks that fell at the diner in few seconds. Despite these skills, he did not understand the monetary value of money.
