Mark Twain is a well-known novelist; his novels contained a wide range of written expressions varying from humor, comprehensive details, and likeable characters. Several of Twain’s written literatures are considered classics, which include, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain’s notorious novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, has been and continues to be a very controversial topic due his graphic descriptions of racism. Although the “n” word was commonly used to describe African Americans in the 1880’s, the word is currently considered very offensive. Many critics think that this book is racist because Twain openly states the “n” word throughout the novel, but this is only one form of racism found within the
Back in the 1880’s people would only think of African Americans as property and not humans. “No! That old fool sold him,” “Sold him?” I says, and begun to cry,” (Baym and Levine). Huck and the man keep on in conversation, long after awhile the man says a farmer by the name Silas Ph— has got a hold of Jim. Jim has gone off in to his journey to get to his destination, which was the Phelps farm, where Toms, Aunt Sally is currently living. As Jim encounters the Phelps farm, he is nervous, he now is acting as Tom and continues in conversation with Aunt Sally about what has taken so long and him not knowing the direction of the river, he proceeds to say “It warn’t the grounding—that didn’t keep us back but a little. We blowed outs a cylinder-head.” Aunt Sally says,” Good gracious! Anybody hurt?” “No’m. killed a “n” ,” Huck says, “Well, it’s lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt.”(Baym and Levine) This is where it has shown that Aunt Sally was also a racist. Aunt Sally has just referred to Jim as in “it” instead of the human he was. She would have considered the white folks as the people who would have gotten hurt, because she also was a white woman.
I have given just a few examples of racism written in this book. Twain’s novel has shown and continues to be a controversial subject due to the racism portrayed in this book; as we have encountered certain people that have shown the racism. From Tom and Huck, to Pap, and Aunt Sally. It is clear to say that these characters were the main ones to show us that they were not the least bit concerned on how the African Americans were
