Race and ethnicity are sometimes thought of as the same thing, but they are actually not synonyms at all. The idea of race is more rooted in biology and more recently, genetics, while ethnicity is a cultural feature. Both of these concepts are major forces in everyday life because they both have social implications. The concept of race is essentially overt and biological. A person's race, at least supposedly, can be identified by observable qualities like their skin color, their eye color, the shape of their eyes and face, and their color and pattern of their hair (DeFreece, 2016). There is a difference between a biological and a social view of race. Biologically, race is seen as genetic, unchanging, and distinct categories of people; this includes physiological differences within different races. A social view of race is not simply scientific, but also includes the societies where people live, how race affects social hierarchy as well as psychographic and geographic traits.
Race has no biological meaning. There is only one human race; there are no subspecies, no single defining characteristic, traits, or even gene, separates one “race” from another. Instead of being a biological concept, race is a social construct, and a relatively modern one at that. Race and ethnicity are two words used very often in everyday speech interchangeably, thus making it seem like they mean the same thing. However, there is a significant difference between the two. According to Kerry Ferris and Jill Stein, race is “based on real or perceived biological differences between groups of people” (Ferris & Stein 2012). Ethnicity on the other hand is “based on common language, religion, nationality, history, or another cultural factor” (Ferris & Stein 2012). They’re social constructs, meaning that they’re concepts/ideas created and maintained by people who agree that they exist. All society’s have a tendency to categorize and identify people based on these two socially defined categories. Doing this creates a system of classification or categorization that leads to inequality. Societal resources such as wealth, power, privilege, and opportunity are dispersed according to this system of stratification (Ferris & Stein 2012). Such powerful social constructs always influence the members of society in some way.
